New Official Integration: Samsung Multiroom Audio

Sorry, I was being really slack with my description - I meant the source can be controlled via an app rather than SmartThings. I use the Samsumg Multiroom app on my Android device which can change input on the soundbar.

So what I was really suggesting, is that there is a packet of information which can be sent over the network which changes the source - which, if Samsung and Samsung have a chat to each other, could surely be added to any Samsung device interaction from ST. On the config page, alongside “what to play” and “where to play it”, you just need “set to this source after playback”.

The easiest solution is likely to get a separate speaker but that defeats the purpose. I also tried playing it to the TV speakers because they show up as separate audio device. However, that didn’t go anywhere likely because the TV is connected to the soundbar via TVConnect.

Mine was at least changing to the “WiFi” source no matter what was already playing when I put a ST notification through it - it was the letting go of the source that was the problem.

Maybe it needs to be able to query the current source first (which is possible over the network - the official Samsung Multiroom app can tell you what it’s currently set to), then play a notification sound, then change it back to whatever it was. That would allow for your circumstances.

I’ve only got a D8000 so can’t use TVConnect, I think that came in on the F range a couple of years later.

I can’t find any info to confirm if this speaker is officially support?

It’s on sale now for Black Friday week

I just picked one up from Costco (last one, they’ve been flying off the shelf) and by itself without connecting it through my ST hub, it works great! The box states that it “Works with SmartThings”. The problem is I can’t get my SmartThings app to find the speaker. I followed the instructions but it never finds it. Doing a firmware update on the speaker as I type to see if that works.

So fingers crossed!

That should work![quote=“ricerx, post:90, topic:20839, full:true”]

That should work

I believe you need the WAM250 hub for ST integration. they can be purchased fairly cheaply. I picked up one from Amazon for around $25, then found another open box at best buy for $15. I ordered one of the R1’s, but Fedex managed to lose it for a few days. I should finally get it tomorrow.

I ordered the R1 today from Best Buy. Can someone confirm that we need the WAM250 hub for integration?

Hey guys, this isn’t true… There currently is no need for the hub, other than to do multi-room audio. If you’d like to pipe audio to any speaker, you don’t need the hub. But you can’t do multi-room on the old speakers (wam350, wam550, wam750).

Currently having the bridge added to smartthings does nothing for me.

Thanks for clarifying @nljc88. The M series does do multi room audio with the hub. I have 5 M series speakers already and use multiform daily.

I haven’t really done anything with these speakers in ST though. I’d love to have access to choose media from within the ST app. I was hoping to see better integration within ST

Yeah, the box/instructions and looking around the web don’t have any info on connecting the R1 to the ST Hub. It also doesn’t mention anything about needing the wam250 hub which I was hoping it didn’t, lol! At this point I still haven;t been able to get it to find the speaker either through my Samsung Galaxy Note Edge or my Nexus 7 Tablet.

I did order another speaker at Best Buy since all Costcos around me are sold out. It’s been a great little addition. I also received my Amazon Echo and that integrated with ST without any problems. It works with controlling my devices through the ST hub. Love it! makes me lazier… no need to whip out my phone; just need to speak to Alexa. We would hope that the speaker would be just as easy…

Fedex was able to get my package to me today, which was a pleasant surprise. It was quick and easy to add it to my system. I setup it up using the samsung app first, then added it in Smartthings using the Samsung Connect app. It immediately saw it on my hub, so it was a check box, then clicking done.

What smartapp can you use to play notification like Sonos?

OK I found my issue. I had my ST hub plugged into a router I converted into a wifi repeater. I’ve never had any type of connection issues or finding other devices with this setup but figured what the heck, let me plug the hub into the main router and see if it finds the speaker; voila, instant find.

How is the Audio Quality with this? I Bought One of the Shape M7’s and was pretty dissapointed in the audio quality. The Echo is Far superior in my limited experience. I may have to just bite the bullet and go sonos.

Really? You were unhappy with the M7? I have been really happy with mine (Also my M5), sounds much better than the Sonos play 3 and play 5, and better than Bose by a long shot, IMO.

Which music service were you piping to it? Is it to much bass/rich for you?

I love my M5 - The only thing I don’t like is the fact it seems to be a restricted DLNA option. You cant use a standard Android phone and push auto to it through the stock audio app, unlike SONOS.

However, if anyone is interested in the M range ao.com have them on at low low prices at the moment.

I have tried multiple services: Amazon, Pandora and Tune-in, and I have good wifi signal where it’s at. It actually doesn’t seem rich enough, The treble seems high and the whole thing seems a little distorted. I have tried changing the equalizer settings through the app that helped a little bit. Maybe it’s a bad unit?

I will admit that I haven’t tried updating the firmware yet as Initially I thought it would be a good office speaker but after seeing it/hooking it up using it for a day I decided that the Echo would be a better solution and size for my desk. So I moved it to the basement where now it gets used by the wife.

Good to hear, I agree the Software and interface could be much better, but from a price point of view, and sound quality, I think they are an excellent alternative to over priced Bose and Sonos.

I’d suggest first updating the Firmware (If its on wireless, simply hold the mute button for more than five seconds and all three will start flashing, once firmware is updated, it will reboot, and the lady will talk to you), then I’d suggest playing something directly from your phone via wifi if possible? To rule out a bad stream etc… Also, it could be an issue with your wireless router, depends on the model. As some don’t play nice with samsung, due to uPNP and other factors.
