NEW Hub Replace Feature for SmartThings Hubs!

I thought I read/heard that too. The only thing I can find that was probably where I heard about it was it’s the newer SmartThings Station hubs that will kinda have it, but from my comprehending, it’s not a ‘manual’ feature, but instead it’s a ‘smart’ feature.

I posted this Samsung Developers Conference video link in the the recent firmware upgrade thread since they covered this new ‘hub replace’ feature ~13:15, but also in the video ~12:25 they discuss the ‘multi-hub’ feature where the device will connect to the nearest SmartThings Station hub in what they call a ‘threaded’ environment. Pretty cool…hummmm…

Yep. Could be that. Together with the remark that execution will be cloud based if an automation handles devices on different hubs. Which is logic.
But where o where did I pick that up.
I see good use for it: I have a place that checks “visitors” both by door sensor and a motion sensor.
For me it would be nice to have them on different hubs.
Or a Zigbee device that looks instable. Bringing it to a different hub, like a Station for instance, to test if the stability increases
The cloud execution I would take for granted.

But always should be taken in consideration that it does not complicate ST too much.

Till now ST is easy enough for first time users.

Michael,

Thank you for this additional information. It is very helpful.

As a YT creator I elected to post a video about this new feature. One question that has been asked by a viewer is concerning the frequency of hub backups. Can you comment on how often backups are made? Thank you.

Hey @Buds_Smart_Home,

Currently, the backups are done roughly once ever 24 hours (with jitter) though some key events can trigger them to happen more immediately for specific network changes. These backups are sent encrypted and only the most recent backup is stored. The specifics here may change over time as we see how the current implementation and configuration fairs in practice.

If the “source” hub in a replace is online, we will always try to do an up-to-date backup when the replace operation is performed.

Related but not sure if I’ll get an answer. Why is it so difficult to buy a smartthings hub in the uk? It seems the market is all second hand. Vesternet.com have v3 hubs for sale but none in stock. Amazon has none available, and other retailers like Argos and Currys no long have them listed.

I see what you mean. The one that is currently available on Amazon UK seems to be the EU model not the UK one if you delve into the details and the UK one is out of stock.

Historically it has always sucked. Five years ago about the only place you could get SmartThings stuff officially at consistent prices was Currys, if you were lucky, and the hubs also turned up on Amazon for £100 each or £200 for the kit which was regularly discounted to £100 which was cheaper than the cost of the extras ensuring a healthy resale market for the unwanted hubs. Anywhere else was a bit suspect and even direct purchasing from Samsung/SmartThings was difficult with poor availability and unstable and often very high pricing.

Once Aeotec took over things seemed to stabilise and availability improve as they seemed to know what they were doing but the hubs do seem to have vanished for the moment.

It would be nice to be able to get the SmartThings Station over here too.

It’s dissapointing that as they’re inteoducing “hub everywhere” in the uk it’s “hub nowhere”. I’ve got a bit of a weak spot in my house where devices are constantly losing connection, the smartthings station would be a perfect addition. I’m hoping the reason why there’s no avilability is due to the release of a new line of hubs or bringing currently non available hubs to the uk market with some fancy launch, but might be wishful thinking.

That said: why are there still no SmartThings Stations available in Holland.
The Aeotec hubs are perfect, but I want a Station!

Thank you, Paul

There do seem to be some supply chain issues all over the world.

As of the moment of this posting (it does change often), Amazon.co.uk does have some coming in, but note that delivery is a week away instead of the usual 2 days. That might be because of my delivery address (US), though.

Also note that there are two different listings on Amazon.co.uk: one for third party sellers and one for Amazon itself. My link above is for “sold by Amazon.”

Amazing find! Been trying to find a hub on there for days. I can confirm if in the uk and a prime member it’s next day delivery

They announced at SDC that the Station is rolling out to more countries next year. They specifically mentioned the UK, not sure about Holland.

I read that one very early this morning and the hub was out of stock. A few moments ago it was £99.99 and available for delivery tomorrow.

Vesternet have UK and EU v3 Aeotec hubs in stock (EU are running low…):

I don’t know much about wireless charging but when I very briefly looked into the subject on the arrival of a new device in the house I came to the conclusion that if I wanted a wireless charger to use with it the SmartThings Station was a bit lacking for this year’s devices. I can’t see how several months more delay is going to help with that. A bleeding edge charger with a SmartThings hub in it has some appeal, but one that is a couple of years behind the times is a more challenging purchase.

I don’t know much about wireless charging either. All I know is I put my phone on it when I go to bed and when I wake up its 100% :joy: Although the lip around the edge can make it a little tricky to line up my iphone since it lands right on the camera bump.

Does anyone know the target date for the release of the SmartThings iOS update 1.7.09?

Be careful what you wish for.

It’s just that I want to update my V2 hub to the Aeotec hub and I believe I need this app update in order to accomplish Hub Replace process. I am currently on version 1.7.06

ST does not release target dates. Best you will get is the expected release posted in the first post (Oct. 19th) → iOS will be available in just a few weeks.
