Logitech Harmony Ultimate - $169.99 - Amaazon Deal Of the Day

This is such a great remote. I always recommend it to people. Once you get it setup, it is effortless and always worksā€¦unless of course the cats pulled the power cord out. Iā€™m hoping for a cat-proof version soon.

But this one is not a ā€œHomeā€ model, right? Does it integrate with ST? I thought the integration was strictly for the 3 models with ā€œHomeā€ in the name.

Any Harmony with the hub will integrate with ST . The " home" models have the extra HA buttons. With the touchscreen, the extra buttons are a moot point, since you can make as many touchscreen buttons as you want.

I wouldnā€™t say moot. Personally, Iā€™ve looked at the ultimates a couple times but I just canā€™t seem to talk myself into giving up the tactile response/placement awareness of a physical button.

Are the buttons on this back lit?

Hi, I have a few questions about how this controls my home theater things.

1 - Does it transmit IR to them and if so, do they all have to be together? My TV is on one wall but my AV receiver, cable box and blueray player are all on the other side of the room and I have yet to find a way to make that work.

2 - Does it know the codes for my equipment or does it have to be taught from exiting remotes?

3 - Can ST do all the controlling so I donā€™t even need the actual remote part, or does the remote have to be pointed at all the equipment?

Thanks!

So with the touch screen, I can add HA buttons, is what youā€™re saying, and Iā€™ll have the same functionality of the ā€œHomeā€ model (minus the tactile feedback)?

Absolutely, I have one hub upstairs behind my tv, with two ir outs, One goes out of the cabinet to hit the tv/soundbar, the other one has a 100ā€™ extension on it and goes to my basement media room! It works great, There is an article floating around on how to extend it, Iā€™ll post it if I find it.

As Promised Extending IR leads

Second Option to Extending IRs

Most things it knows the codes for, If it doesnā€™t have them you can ā€œTeachā€ the codes to the hub if you have the existing remote although for my AV equipment I havenā€™t had to use the teach command yet.

I havenā€™t gone this far, but I think some have gone quite far with it. There are some threads on harmony to bone up on. But I donā€™t know if it would ever be as handy as having the remote in hand. Harmony also has a companion app you can add to your phone and control any of your hubs with.

Yes

Thanks very much @schapper05 for the great information. One more question, does this thing use those little wired IR emitters that connect to the device its controlling? I ask because my equipment is stacked up in shelves and unless some powerful emitter is placed across the room there is no way to place an IR transmitter close ad in front of all of them.

Iā€™ll do some googling and see what I can find. Is this a good price?

Iā€™m skittish because I remember that - and I admit it was years ago - I had a Harmony remote and could not make it work at all. It became an expensive paperweight I eventually lost.

Yes

THe hub itself has an IR ā€œblasterā€ thatā€™s pretty powerful, mine works on stuff that is not line-of-sight via reflected IR signals I guess. It also has two mini IR extensions for anything that doesnā€™t receive the signal from the main hub.

Price is good, I bought a refub from Amazon for $250 about a year ago, so $170 for a new one is good. Iā€™m probably going to order a second one this time around.

ST can only control activities, not individual devices. So if you have an activity turn on TV, set to channel 36, dim lights to 30%. ST can start the activity.
If you take the time to make an activity/routine for every possible action, than yes it technically is possible. My biggest ST integration ( the one I use daily) is to turn off current activity with Good Bye or Goodnight routines.
Harmony can only do 1 activity at a time. So if you set it to turn heat to 72*, it will by default stop any other activity. So turn to turn on the heat automatically is needs to turn off the TV.
I went nuts ( WAF was about -1000 ) when I added turn on taotoncs LEDs in Harmony on motion to ST, so every time somebody ( or animal ) walked by front door it would shut off TV she was watching and turn on the outside LEDs. It wasnā€™t until I notice cat in hall at the same time TV shut off. I quickly removed Harmony controlled lights from the motion trigger.
Harmony just added direct Alexa integration, but again it is limited to routines, so you can NOT adjust volume, or change channel. So far I have found my current virtual switch to end Harmony activity works just fine, so no reason mess with it. ( since I have ST virtual switch TV, the direct Alexa turn off TV was disabled during Harmony setup as I already have a TV switch )

It can, but no. The hub acts as an IR blaster and floods the entire area with the IR commands. There is also the option to add 2 mini IR emitters to the hub for items that do not have LOS from the hub. I use one of the little emitters in the window to control my Taotonic LED strips outside on the porch. The other one is set to control the window A/C in the other room. They are NOT like the old IR emitters that some cable boxes and VCRs come with that need to be stuck onto the IR receiver of the equipment. The hub blasts the IR 360 degrees so if the device is in the same room, it should get the signal. If you place the hub inside a closed cabinet, you would use 1 of the mini blasters on top of the cabinet to control the TV.

It dos work nice, if you donā€™t mind having to pu your phone or tablet to control all those other IR device, I donā€™t need to find the Taotinoc clicker and go stand in the window or on the porch to change the light color. I donā€™t need to go into the other room to adjust A/C temp. I open Harmony app, go to devices, select the air conditioner and set the temp, or select the porch LEDs and change the color or sequence .

I can see how it may be confusing. As @destructure00 said the hub itself is a powerful IR blaster. You want to locate this to where the most of your devices will be. The hub also has two ir out ports that additional blasters can be connected to, but they only come with a ~10ā€™ length these are the ones I was talking about extending. The Ultimate comes with two external blasters.

Okay Iā€™m getting the flavor of this.

But what I have read here confuses me on one point: How does ST talk to it? Does ST talk directly to the hub to make it transmit IR?

You add the Harmony app to ST. like most other integrations it is C2C . That said when I run Good Night the TV is usually one of the first things to turn off, before all the house lights .

I will throw in my :+1: for the Harmony Remotes. I have the Ultimate, but only because I paid all of $3.23 out-of-pocket for it.

I honestly have not had to touch the thing since I went through all of the virtual switch setup 10 months agoā€¦ a BIG thanks to @JDRoberts for all of his helpful posts!

I have voice commands for Alexa to turn the TV+A/V receiver+PS3+Xbox 360+lights+change the channel (combinations of all of them) from a single command. And the ā€œall importantā€ turn-it-all-off at the end of the day. The thing just works and works well!

Also, the Harmony configuration software has improved quite a bit over the years.

Pricey, no doubtā€¦ but the Harmony remotes are the best, IMHO.

End of meanigfull post

Below is a price breakdown on how I was fortunate enough to get the remote so cheaplyā€¦ obviously some trickery involved in that claim!

The price was $349.99 @ BestBuy when I purchased it last year, but after $100 off sale, $10 in Best Buy Reward Points and using the proceeds from selling (on eBay) an unopened Harmony 900 that I received 2 years earlier as a gift, then I received a Price Match for an additional $50 OFF a week later.
