@nayelyz okay thanks guess I will have to look into the Aeotec Hub to get smart things working then. Too bad they are out of stock almost everywhere.
right now, there only appears to be Used Aeotec hubs for Sale ā> https://smartmatters.co/collections/zigbee-hubs-gateways/products/aeotec-smart-home-hub-smartthings-aeohubv3
There are indications that a new V4 hub may be released at the end of August or early September but nothing has been confirmed except it appears to have shown up in South Korea. https://community.smartthings.com/t/new-smartthings-v4-hub-released-do-you-already-know-about-it/303946/
Thanks for the info , appreciate it. Looks like V4 wonāt support Zwave which is my whole reason for getting Smart Things as Abode wonāt support the new model replacement of my light switches, which all got taken out by a power surge.
I just experience this on one if my V2 hubs. Hub was plugged into Ethernet, soft reset, factory reset, no matter what it always came back up to a solid blue light.
Use this sequence:
-
unplug Ethernet and power
-
hold reset button and apply power. Let the yellow flashing light go for 30 seconds until it goes yellow solid and release reset button. (Keep Ethernet unplugged)
-
allow the hub to reboot and go through the motions, blinking blue, magenta, etc etc. wait for approximately 3 minutes or so for the hub to stabilize on just blinking blue.
-
now plug in Ethernet.
-
hurry up and wait. At least in my case, after about 60 seconds, the hub led turned magenta indicating fireware download. I let it do its thing.
-
after a bit longer, the hub led finally turned green.
At this point I was able to finally see the hub communicating with the app and seeing some attributes finally populate. It took another 10 minutes and in the advanced web interface, I finally saw all the parameters, radio info and firmware version up to date.
Thanks @ThomasTrain but I never even see a blinking yellow light on my hub, no matter what I do. Firmware is just too old I think.
While Holding in reset button at the rear and then plug in power while continuing to hold down the reset button and you donāt get yellow flashing light?
Correct. I only ever see a red light then blue light and eventually a green light. I have gone ahead and ordered a Aeotec hub because I have given up on getting this V2 hub working.
Before my time, but I believe that the soft/hard reset capability arrived in the same firmware update that changed hub updates from incremental to full, and that happened in early 2017.
I just bought another an old āfor partsā v2 hub off eBay for $13 without a power supply
I factory reset it before doing anything else (hold reset, flashing yellow to solid yellow), then repeated the procedure I listed above by allowing it to boot up without Ethernet plugged in, letting it sit for 10 minutes on the flashing blue and then plugging in Ethernet. It went solid blue, then after a few seconds, flipped to magenta to pull down the firmware. after two reboots and a power plug reboot, I finally came up green and I was able to add it to a new location on my SmartThings account. It came up initially with a v24 firmware and then within about 5 minutes, it went magenta again and downloaded 57.x firmware.
Seems to be in good shape now and advanced web portal is properly showing zigbee and zwave radios active.
I got a question Since my deviceās firmware is too old to automatically connect to the correct update server, Iād like to ask the SmartThings developers if it would be possible to provide a downloadable firmware file or a software patch. This patch would ideally change the deviceās default communication directory or server address, allowing it to contact the right server to get updated to the latest version. I am requesting a patch for the firmware/ROM redirection, not a full, exploitable firmware release for public use or Is this sth-eth-250 smartthings landfill material
Have you tried the steps mentioned by @ThomasTrain?
He posted here as well:
I donāt have information about a downloadable file. You could contact Customer Support to ask about that to see if they know something.
Hi, I am experiencing this issue but I canāt see how to DM you. Ive sent an email to Build@ hopefully you can help.
Hi @M_J1
Thanks for reaching out. Iāve already replied to your email, and Iāll continue following up with you through that channel.
Iām afraid Iām in the same boat as Austin_Powers.
I bought an apparently unused v2 hub on eBay. Adopted it to the app using the Welcome Code, but see empty Firmware Version in AWA.
Blocked outbound 123 at my firewall.
Trying to follow ThomasTrainās instructions, I only see red - off - blue - red - off. When I let go of the reset button, solid blue - off - blinking blue. When I plug in the network cable, blinking blue - solid blue - solid green. Never yellow. Not sure if red = magenta?
Tried to capture log to Fat32 USB. Light goes from red to off to solid blue. Never flashing. After removing the drive, back to solid green. No no files on the USB drive. [Edit - tried this successfully in an up-to-date v2 hub. Now I see that āmagentaā is more pink than red.]
I connected a mirrored network port and fired up Wireshark. I can see that the hub is successfully talking to dc-na4-useast2.connect.smartthings.com, which resolves to 18.281.78.141 and 18.189.81.211. I see the certificate exchange and Server Hello Done, and a couple dozen lines of Application Data. So the cloud server is still there, but the hub doesnāt seem to be doing much with it.
Any suggestions?
I see you mentioned adding the block on port 123⦠did you remove the block right after onboarding the hub in the app?
No. Here was the sequence:
- Port 123 on. Added hub to a new location with Welcome Code. Blank firmware in AWA.
- Port 123 off. Reset hub and try to add again to a third location. After entering the Welcome Code, it gave me an error message, I assume because the hub was already claimed.
- Port 123 off. Attempt resets initially off the network (per ThomasTrain). Did not try re-adding to app.
- Eventually turned 123 back on. Over an hour later, firmware still blank.
Note that the hub doesnāt show in the app. Am I supposed to delete the location in the app? The hub does show in AWA, so I guess I could delete it there. I was nervous to delete it in case thatās the only time it would connect.
No need to delete it in the AWA⦠resetting the hub will take care of that.
Try:
- Block port 123 or ntp.org domain
- Reset hub ( remove any batteries, leave the Ethernet cable connected to both hub and router, unplug the hub, press the reset slot and reconnect power cable, when you see the solid yellow led, release pressing the reset slot)
- Onboard hub into ST app and then remove blocking port 123 or ntp.org
Then check in AWA on the firmware version⦠give it a bit of time. If it continues to report blank and you are unable to gather logs from the hub, you will need confirmation from ST Staff that the hub canāt be used due to not receiving a specific firmware update years ago that changed the update server addresses needed to get firmware updates.
If that happens to be the case, you should try to get your money back from the seller. For the V2 hubs that have not been manufactured in over 7 or 8 years, do not look for unused as that means it never received needed firmware to avoid this issue.
good luck!
Hi, @sd_mark
As @jkp mentioned, if you canāt get the hub logs after all the attempts of blocking the port, the engineering team cannot see the necessary details to be able to help the Hub.
Also, not being able to get the Hub logs or the reset steps is not working is an indicator that the Hub has a very old firmware version beyond recovery.
So, the suggestion is to return the hub.
Thanks. Unfortunately, the LED never turns yellow when I try to reset. I waited until it turned blue then released the reset button. But I canāt re-onboard because of the Welcome Code error message (āA network or server error occurredā):
After that, the hub is still shown in AWA from the initial registration.
I decided to delete the hub from AWA and try again (what could go wrong? haha). This time, I was able to complete hub registration and I can see the hub in the app for the first time.
I removed the 123 block.
In the app, the hub shows connected with app version 1.0.46-1. In AWA, it still shows blank firmware.
The LED is solid green, so Iām afraid itās not trying to (or not able to) update firmware.
If itās just a matter of directing traffic to a new server, I could set up a temporary override in my internal DNS server (I have Windows domain controller here). But if the method of firmware updating has changed, new handshaking or whatever, that wouldnāt be enough.
Thanks both of you for your replies.
Return is probably not an option. The eBay seller stated, āBox is open, comes with all original accessories, all instructions. Cords are all still wrapped.ā So I got what was promised. I did get a hub, motion sensor, plug, and two multipurpose sensors for $50 so thereās still some value.
I did call Samsung/SmartThings before purchase to make sure they would be able to give me a Welcome Code if that was missing. They confirmed that they could. Would be nice if they had mentioned that older devices will not work if they havenāt been upgraded on an ongoing basis.
I called them again just now. I opened Account Data Access. We went through reset a couple times. No yellow light means a faulty device; she is escalating to Tier 2. I tried to explain about getting a log on USB but she said that is not possible.
