Gear Watch Smartthings App - Development Thread

LOL! One of my buddies works in B2B development as well, and we were talking about SmartThings and the dev community/GitHub, and he said something like “Keep your grimy fingers out of my code…”

Thanks for the detailed update.

I set modes via routines as well, so for me that would be fine.

I have a Schlage deadbolt on the front door, PM me if you’d like me to test/try anything for you.

Others here (@johnconstantelo) have experience with publishing/sharing SmartThings SW, and maybe can chime in on potential pitfalls/issues, and best paths.

Glad to hear you progress is going well! Open sourcing would be awesome to help develop new features individually; I completely agree that it is tough maintaining GitHub projects because there are so many different coding styles and sometimes people don’t right the best code but they have the coolest features. The beauty of forking and pull requesting is that you can review the code for specific feature additions and comment back and forth to have them change / update things before committing those changes into the master branch.

My company uses GitHub to open source a lot of our smaller applications / utilities and I maintain a few of those projects and I can say that I have had to outright deny quite a few changes due to bad coding practices or just inefficient logic, so feel free to reject whatever you want when you are maintainer :stuck_out_tongue:

BTW, slightly off topic, recently discovered that there is a Tasker integration for Gear S2/S3…it allows you access to any and all of your Tasker Tasks on your phone from a nice interface on your watch. Also provides access to SmartThings via the Tasker>SharpTools plugin (assuming you have SharpTools installed/setup). Something to play with wile waiting for this more desirable/elegant solution.

Could not resist any more - picked up an S3 today, so now I’m even more excited about this app - I have .1" more screen to display it on!!

Oh, and I’m geeky enough that I consider this very cool…I kept forgetting to enable ST notifications on my watch, finally did so last night.

Looks very cool Dana! How did you go about enabling Smartthings notifications on device. I’m trying to find these options on my Android Wear LG Urbane but I’m not seeing anything within Smartthings Mobile to enable Wear notifications. Thanks.

@vyse8/Matt:

You enable this on the smartwatch settings, not in SmartThings.

For instance, there is an option in the Gear app that runs on the phone, under Notifications that allows you to choose which apps you want to allow to send notifications to the watch. I just checked off the SmartThings app in that list.

If Android Wear has a similar option (and I would expect so) you should be able to make the same kind of setting in the Android Wear app.

Ahh I think I found the issue. From what I’m reading online it looks like it might be specific to Samsung watches, which makes sense since they own Smartthings. Now I’m even more tempted to buy the S3 as an upgrade.

Not sure where you found that, but there is no SmartThings watch app on any platform that I’m aware of…ST announced it before it was released and then never released it. :frowning: That’s why we (not me, but others) are having to develop a watch app for ourselves. The one that @ShufordTech is working on here will be Gear S2 / S3 specific, so if you want to run it when it’s released you will need a Gear S2 or S3.

I’m getting the ST notifications on my watch from the ST app on my phone, passed on via the BT connection between my phone and my watch via the Gear app on my phone…I don’t have any ST app on my watch at all.

Yep, that’s how I’d expect it to behave. I wonder if it’s just something specific to the Gear app then. Basically Android Wear lets all notifications in and then you specify which ones you’d like to Block on the phone app. Currently I have no apps selected to be blocked but there seems to be no visibility as to which ones are “enabled”. That’s cool that the Samsung watches do that on their end though.

Android Wear 2.0 is releasing in a day or so, from what I’ve heard, so you could find some improvements coming in the very near future if your watch is slated to get the update.

“Apart from design changes, Android Wear 2.0 introduces watch-face “Complications,” which act like miniature widgets for notifications on your watch.”

Would pay for this in a heart beat. It’s what is missing for many folks with home automation.
I would recommend releasing it with base functions. Then add on the great ideas in the future. Gain visibility. I can’t wait. Thanks.

Thanks for linking this. I had no idea Android Wear 2.0 was right around the corner. Looks like my watch will be getting the upgrade.

Just a quick update.
I’ve been cleaning up the code to make it easier to add new capabilities.
It is now usable with basic functionality, and with enough example code in it to make it easy for people to contribute.

Sweet! Thanks for the update. I know a guy who has been hitting “F9 refresh” on this page hourly for when the release pops.

Count me as one of the “every hour” checkers!

Count me in as a new “every hour” checker… I’ve owned my S2 for about a month now, use it for my gym training and step tracking and have been trying to find a way to use it for ST.

I just discovered this thread and I’m all in for testing.

My new network enabled Home Theater A/V Receiver just arrived today… Having wrist controls for volume/source/radio is something that would be phenomenal through this app.

We are all waiting its looking good so far !

Ok, picked up a used S2 today. Cant wait for app!

One question though. I own a iPhone 6… will I find the app in the Gear store even though its the iPhone?

The last we heard this will not use a companion app - there will be a web service for setup and then a watch app. So it seems like iPhone should be fine…

Any idea of a release date? I’ve got an S3 frontier…

Beta testing is a good thing
