Feature Request: Allow Choosing Custom iOS Notification Sounds for SmartThings Automations

I’d like to propose a feature enhancement for the SmartThings iOS app that would make notifications far more useful and easier to distinguish.

Feature Request

Add the ability to choose a notification sound (from the iOS ringtones library) when creating a Send Notification to Members action in Automations/Routines.

Why This Matters

Right now, SmartThings uses one universal notification sound for all push notifications. This makes it impossible for users to differentiate:

  • Door opened

  • Person detected

  • SmartThings Home Monitor alerts

  • Leak alerts

  • Smoke/CO alerts

  • Routine informational notifications

As a workaround, many users rely on SMS text messages, simply because iOS allows custom tones for text messages — but not for SmartThings notifications. With SMS support continually shrinking, we need a native SmartThings solution.

Being able to assign unique sounds per-notification would give users:

  • Urgent tones for emergencies

  • Softer tones for routine events

  • Better accessibility

  • Less dependence on SMS

UI Suggestion

Below are two images:

  1. The SmartThings action configuration screen

  2. The iOS ringtone selector screen that SmartThings could leverage

This would be a huge quality-of-life improvement and make SmartThings far more responsive and intuitive.

Hoping SmartThings considers this enhancement — and inviting others here to chime in if you’d like to see it too!

Not a solution for iOS but there are a number of solutions to this for android (in case anyone is interested): galaxy routines, buzzkill, tasker and others.
The approach is to look for notifications from a specific app with specific keywords and then triggering a noise or text announcement.

Thanks. I do something similar, but use Alexa and virtual switches for important things.
