Error 39-101 adding Nanoleaf Essentials Matter device

I have lots of automations in Home Assistant, and SmartThings is directly controlling many Z-Wave and Zigbee devices, including lights.

Some of my old smart lights have started failing, so I have begun the transition to Nanoleaf Essentials bulbs, which support Thread and Matter. My SmartThings v2 hub does not directly support Thread, but I have a latest gen Apple TV and Homepod Mini to act as border routers.

I’ve updated Nanoleaf firmware 3.5.37, all of the Apple devices are iOS/iPadOS,tvOS 16.6, and SmartThings reports 000.048.00005. All work is being done on a 2.4Ghz WiFi network using an iOS or iPadOS device.

The design that I’ve settled on is to pair the Nanoleaf bulbs with HomeKit, and get them communicating over Thread. In HomeKit, I put the device into pairing mode, then use the code to pair it as a Matter device in SmartThings.

I got this working with the first BR30 bulb. The fact that it worked once makes me think I’m on the right path. It is quick to respond, and more important, all of my old integrations from ST to HA work exactly as expected.

However, I’ve wasted countless hours trying to get a second bulb to work. I’ve retried many variations of the same formula, restarted devices, tried the pairing from different devices, physically moved the bulb closer to the ST hub, but I am stuck.

This is the error that I am getting consistently from SmartThings.

I cannot find a reference for the exact meaning of this error, nor can I find a log to help me debug.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

I had successfully set up three of these lights shortly after they were originally released, although I connected to the SmartThings hub directly. After a firmware update, one of the lights failed to reconnect to the thread network. I was encountering a consistent error 39-xxx when trying to add the light back.

As of the firmware update which I installed this morning (to 3.5.41) I was able to successfully add the light back. Hopefully that will work for you too.
