DoorBot v2.0 - now called ring video doorbell

Afraid none of my questions were answered…

-API?
-Any web based method of viewing recorded video or streaming outside of an app? ie RSTP or even still image support?
-Is power stealing from existing doorbell supported? I don’t see anything that mentions it.
-Will the device function in cold weather, ie below 0 in MN for weeks on end? How much of an impact on battery life will the cold weather have?
-Will it work in direct sunlight exposed areas?
-The replacement if stolen, does that require proof of theft, like a police report to fulfill? What is the process to get one replaced?
-What wifi security methods does it support? WPA 2 support?

@YassiRing,

I sent you a PM.

I have a question about the new product. On the page it says

“MOTION DETECTION
Motion sensors activate the camera and trigger
instant mobile alerts when movement is detected.”

Is there a motion sensor or is it just using the camera? If I put a piece of black tape over the camera will I still get motion alerts?

Yassi,

Even after contacting you directly I have yet to receive my 50% discount code from you or anyone else at Doorbot or what ever you call yourselves today. Is this another of your companies unfulfilled promises? Continuing to do business in the same manner with a different name will not change your customers prospective of your company or products.

By the way you stated in your email that the issues with the Doorbot’s have been fixed, yet you never offer to replace my unit to help solve my problem. Or tried in ANY way to solve my issues with the product I purchased from your company. Company’s that truly stand behind their products start by trying to solve customers issues.

@YassiRing - Just an idea, but ring should consider putting a relay switch in the device. That way it can provide it’s own door strike/gate buzzer control without being reliant on a 3rd party device integration…in fact, I wouldn’t really need API access if this were the case.

All, I just sent an email to Ring simply asking for their plans - like most of you I’m urgently looking for an integrated doorbell solution that works with ST … apparently, that’s not so easy - here’s the answer from Ring Support:

Thank you for contacting us, and for your interest in our product. At this time, there are no plans towards integrating Ring with smartthings. Should there be any confirmation regarding a move in this direction, we will certainly let you know.
Should you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Thanks,

Seems that that lays this thread to rest, no?
Cheers
Rolf

I’m really hoping they reconsider - an open API would make the device 100x better (obviously for those of us in this community). Does anyone else have some ideas on how to piece together a similar device that may work with SmartThings? I really need it so I can let deliveries through our gate when we’re not home. Thanks for any ideas!

This is where we need Samsung to build a similar device and sell it under their SmartCam line of cameras :thought_balloon:

These guys had a booth at the Engadget Live event in LA that I went to last week. The person I spoke with said they should be releasing an open API in January…we’ll see if that holds true.

I sure hope so…I just can’t imagine devices like this coming to market without API access at this stage in the game. Thanks for the update!

Here’s another vote for SmartThings integration.

I’d definitely buy this if it worked with ST. The whole point of controlling your locks and alarm is just a novelty if you don’t see who rang the bell and make good use of the input.

Has anybody looked into Chui? I am also currently trying to find a video doorbell that will alert me that someone is at my door without ringing the doorbell because it sets my dogs off barking like crazy. I would like to be able to see who is at the door before deciding if I want to go answer it or not. While looking into this I have discovered home automation and I am very interested in this also. Now I have discovered SmartThings and I believe this would offer the best integration possibilities. I believe that the people at Chui would be interested in integrating with SmartThings. Here is a link to there website. https://preorder.getchui.com/the-world-s-most-intelligent-doorbell

I checked it out a few weeks ago. Chui looks really big and kind of ugly IMHO. I’m glad to see more gadgets target the gaping hole of doorbells in the relm of IoT. I think they are all far off the mark on the $200 price point though. They keep over-engineering a simple problem to solve and offer buggy features that don’t really help most people.

I think that they are on the right track though. I will be keeping an eye on them. They seem like a very innovative company. Sooo, does anybody have a solution to my problem that I am trying to solve in the above post?

Yeah I bet the people at Chui are great. I was just looking at the product. Each of us having different entry layouts probably means we have different needs. In our our case, where the doorbell button would sit it would not capture someone’s face.

I wanted notifications of doorbell rings so last week I setup the Mimolite doorbell solution for about $50. Discussed on another thread in this forum. It is 100% instant and reliable with SmartThings notifications and/or text messages so far.

But my wife also wants to view who is at the door before opening it. I should have my $150 Homeboy shipping very soon. https://www.homeboy.com/. I will place that on the inside or outside window sill just above my front door pointing down to view whoever comes up to the door. I will post on how well Homeboy works and if I find a good way to integrate with ST. Hopefully they turn out to be legit and ship soon and deliver a good product. They already have a ton of IFTTT recipes available so I think this one might be good.

I don’t see a way to enter the discount code. Did you do this?

@pcgirl65 @Dlee Given the current state of these devices (time to market, cost, aesthetics, etc) I’m still holding out hope that the Ring ends up being good functionally and ultimately having an API so we can integrate with SmartThings. I’ll let everyone know my experience when it arrives in November (hopefully).

@iHavequestions The Ring rep stated above in this thread that the codes can only be used once. I successfully ordered a Venetian Bronze Ring for $99.

Stay tuned and if any Ring reps @YassiRing are following this thread - PLEASE INTEGRATE WITH SMARTTHINGS!!!

Hi there-

We have 3 PIR lenses which is the part of the hardware that detects the motion. There are motion sensors behind the black lens on the top of the device.

The motion features the ability to turn a “zone” on or off and the ability to change the sensitivity level for the entire device. Motion sensitivity allows the user to control the amount of alerts received (globally, not on an individual basis).

For example, if your kids are playing in the front yard, and you have the motion sensitivity set to “Low” then you will receive a motion alert promptly for that first event. If the kids continue to play in the front yard, the user will not receive another motion alert for 20 mins (this time is just an example).

If your kids are playing in the front yard, and you have the motion sensitivity set to “High” then you will receive a motion alert promptly for that first event. If the kids continue to play in the front yard, the user will not receive another motion alert for 5 mins (this time is just an example).

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Yassi

Hi!

We are certainly interested in integrating with SmartThings. Integrations will not begin until early next year, but SmartThings and Wink are a few on our project timeline. Stay tuned, guys.

Thanks,
Yassi
