Can I setup ST to recognize a double tap of a Decora DZBH light switch?

I have one of the Leviton Decora Z wave plus dimmer switches. DBZH something I think… I’d like to be able to double tap the switch on or off to change the ST mode, like from night to home. Can this be done, and if so, how?

You can try, but it is not likely to be reliable.

The switches that do this reliably have a feature built into the switch which captures the tap pattern there and then sends a single code to the smart things hub. This includes the Homeseer switches and the newest GE zwave switch.

For other brands/models which don’t offer this feature in the switch itself, some people have written code which tries to capture the taps when it gets to the cloud and measure the timing in between them. The problem is that any lag caused by the round trip to the cloud or just from the message routing a different way through your network will throw off the calculation. Plus the method only works when the switch is within 1 hop of the hub, if it goes through another repeater, it won’t work. :disappointed_relieved:

If you look on the quick browse lists in the community – created wiki in the smart app section and look on the lighting list you will see a couple of different smart apps which try to offer a double tap feature. But you will also see a lot of comments in those threads from people saying it doesn’t work for them, or that it works sometimes but not other times.

There’s no harm in trying it, but if this is a feature that you really want, you should select one of the devices which offers it in the switch hardware itself.
