Any products for an outdoor fence latch?

Does anyone know if there is a smartthings-compatible product (padlock?) that I could use for an outdoor fence? The latch is pretty standard (link below). I’d like to be able to unlock/lock the gate for the lawn guy and/or landscape folks on a set schedule. Any thoughts on the best way to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance!

Several people have posted project reports on various gate projects. I don’t know if any of them will apply directly, but they might give you some ideas.

Check the quick browse lists in the community – created wiki. Look for “gates” under the project section. :sunglasses:

I believe this has been asked quite a few times and nobody has come up with a solution yet. I would imagine this is due to it being outside.

The only thing I can think of is housing something like an ESP8266 with a motor in a box that lifts the latch up. I’m not sure if this would be strong enough though

I am using first gen and second gen ST multi sensors on my PVC gates and I seran wrapped the internals and so far in the summer, no issues. Let’s see what happens during winter. There are now outdoor rated zwave strips that will work for non metallic gates as well that are available via pre order.

One option to consider, although it doesn’t have an integration with SmartThings, is the master Bluetooth padlock. It’s a nice device and comes in both an indoor and an outdoor model. You can grant guest access with a day or night schedule.

The main problem with it is that if you don’t want the guest to install the master lock app on their smart phone in order to use the guest access then there is a physical access means using the lock itself but it’s a gesture code so that you have to do something like left right right down up up right. And it’s a seven gesture code every time. That’s pretty hard to remember.

Also the schedule choice is pretty limited: either 24/7, daytime only, or night time only. You can’t limited to specific days of the week. But of course you could combine the setup with a SmartThings-compatible contact sensor so you could get an alert if the gate was opened at a time when you weren’t expecting it to be.

So I don’t know if that would meet your requirements, but it is an option.

( SmartThings does have a Bluetooth antenna in the V2 hub, but it has never been enabled so you can’t use it.)

Again, no integration with SmartThings, but it might need the specific use case.

Here’s something interesting I found during a recent search for a z-wave pedestrian gate lock for my patio gate. Maybe there’s hope in the near future?? I just don’t get why this hasn’t been done already!!

That one’s been “coming soon” for over a year. You might write the company and ask what the plans are for it.
