Alexa displays device as unresponsive while ST shows the device is active

You can likely change it back. The process of changing to something and changing back worked for all mine

Yep, changing he device type, saving and then changing it back and saving worked like a charm! Thanks!

I have the same problem. Alexa answers all my control commands with “smartthings is not responding” and in the app it reports “server is unresponsive”. However, the devices respond in the correct way (e.g. The lights are turned on or off).

I just reached out to someone from the live chat. He told me to disable the skill in Alexa and remove the smartapp in Smartthings. Then remove the device in Alexa, re-enable the skill and discover new devices again. Unfortunately this didn’t work.

Next he asked me to reboot my smart hub and try the same. Still didn’t work. Now I am added to the list of users with this issue. It is a known issue and they’re working on it. He couldn’t give me a time-line for the fix.

Hopefully the hints above might work for other people.

Did you ever find a fix?

Yes and no. The problem is only with one specific device for me. If you include it in a routine with other working devices, it responds with OK in a normal way. If you only command the specific device it again reports the error.

Sorry to necro this thread, but just wanted to send a thanks to all of you for the tip on changing the device type to something else and back to make Alexa start working with a device.

I’ve been frustrated with 1 single device in my house for the last month that suddenly stopped working with Alexa while everything else continued just fine. A quick device type reset and it was fixed. So, thanks!

I am having this same issue. Did you ever get a resolution?

Yes, I only had it for one device. I disconnected that device from Smartthings and reconnected it. Then I did the same for the device list in Alexa. In hindsight, I think that just doing the latter might be enough.

Something that also worked initially is grouping it under a scene. In that case Alexa doesn’t complain.

i’m getting the same error message for my ZWAVE devices. All Zigbee devices respond correctly

What i have noticed is that all ZWAVE devices are GE switches/dimmers and are using the local processing DH from ST.
Could that be the issue ?

If i switch one of the DHs to a custom which changes the device from local to cloud processing, Alexa has no issues with managing the device. Change the DH back to local processing one from ST and within a few hours the issue is back…

I had this issue as well on a few devices. They were great for a month. Then I bought a z-wave garage controller. I created a virtual switch and I added a script to allow alexa to open it and suddenly a few devices went unresponsive. I tried the reboot and other suggestions with no luck. The entire time they worked great in ST.

I decided to disable the smartthings skill in alexa. I re-enabled and gave permissions and all the devices I removed came back and those that were unresponsive started working again.

I’m having this problem too.

Changing the DH has no effect. I’ve disabled the smartthings skill and re-enabled a dozen times over the past year and gave permissions and all the devices and those that were unresponsive started working again but for only about an hour. Then they all stop working and the app reports “SERVER IS UNRESPONSIVE” on 90+ devices. In 2 years I’ve never gotten it to work reliably for more than a few days.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
