Is it possible at all to add Z-wave devices to a Smartthings Hub 2015 (STH-ETH) without using the app? I had set up the hub years ago using the app, but now unfortunately the app no long runs on my smartphone, and I have no other mobile device that will run it.
Hi, @Potter. Welcome to the SmartThings Community!
The app requires Android 10 or higher. And it is required to put the Hub into discovery mode.
Also, if you set up the Hub years ago, has it been connected to the Internet since then, or has it been disconnected for a long time?
It’s been connected the whole time and is still working. But I just recently had to replace a couple of my Z-wave devices and I have no way to add them to the hub.
Do you have a Chromebook? They can run android apps.
What operating system and version is running on your phone? If it is an Android you should be able to get an older version of the app from a APK site such as APK Pure.
No, unfortunately.
The smartphone is running Android 9. It’s an ancient Motorola E6. The app is still installed but no longer works. There’s a message in the Play store saying the app won’t work any more.
I also have a Samsung Galaxy Tab A running Android 11. Even though it’s Samsung it has never run the Smartthings app. Go figure. Apparently it’s not actually made by Samsung.
I have tried sideloading earlier versions of the app onto both devices and neither one runs it.
I have decided to buy a cheap Motorola G 5G phone running Android 14 for $160. If it works it will be worth it to me since I’ll get my smart home back. If it doesn’t I’ll just return it. I actually don’t use a smartphone in my daily life, but every so often I do need something to run an app. I suppose one day I’ll be forced to get a real smartphone just to live my life.
It should work correctly, so, please let us know if you have any issues.
I dug out an old Motorola Moto G6 phone and it is running Android 9. It has SmartThings Version 1.8.01.22 (May 9, 2023 version) installed. It runs very slow but works ok. You can find that SmartThings version at APKPure.
That worked! Thanks for taking the time to find this.
