Root just gives you higher level access to the current OS. You’re still running Amazon’s wonky/limited android distro. If you want full control of every aspect of your device you need to replace the OS.
I suggest CM12…
My Fire updated to 5.1.1 which I don’t think has gotten a Cyanogenmod rom yet.
great idea on the fire 7, i got it today, rooted and got everything running… great tablet for 40$!!!

What Magnets did you use? I tried 4 different types and non were strong enough to hold up the tablet

I can confirm it’s possible to load CM12.1 from FireOS 5.1.1. I used RootJunky’s scripts to load the ADB drivers, root the phone, install the Playstore so I could load FlashFire (0.27) to load the latest CM12.1 (Feb 3rd build date) for the Amazon Fire 5th gen. It was fairly smooth except the OpenGapps didn’t install the first time around so I was left with a CM12.1 installation with no Playstore or any other Google apps.
Unfortunately I can’t install the ST Mobile app from the Playstore as it’s I’m told “Your device isn’t compatible with this version”. What can I do about this? I don’t think it’s a Cyanogen mod issue as I can load ST Mobile on my CM12.1 OnePlus One phone just fine.
I sideloaded the ST app with ES File Explorer. Downloaded the apk from apkpure.com.
SmartTiles is looking good so far. Just need to get the display to rotate.
So I had an old iPad setup but it was limited with what I could do with it and liked the idea of the cheap kindle so I got 2 (for now).
Before and After
I used magnets to attached it to the wall so it can be used for managing not only Smartthings but the Media Center. I did not do any crazy soldering. I just knocked out a piece by the charger port and it slid in fine.
Then I did the same setup in my master. The power button is in the bottom right and easily clickable to turn on the screen. I am still waiting to setup tap or double tap to turn on the screen when it comes available.
Everything I ordered was pretty much the same as Beckwith except when trying to order magnets of Apex there site had issues so I went with these.

You inspired me to put mine under the cover. Took some wire cutters, cut a slit and slid the charger cable in within seconds. Sweet!
I imagine with six magnets you need a crowbar to pull it off the wall.
Did you think of orienting the magnets so you could position it in either landscape or portrait? I don’t know if it is possible but it would be nice to have that option.
The magnets was trial an error. I used 4 but it seems to wobbly. 6 seemed more stable. It comes off pretty easily. My wife prefers landscape. I was trying to set it up so I cold do either landscape or portrait and im sure with some playing you can but I game up.

One from the warehouse will surely already have the latest firmware on it, the 5.1.1, vs 5.0.1. For me, I would not want one with 5.1.1 on it, but that is just me. I’d rather be able to fully root/recover it, and that needs 5.0.1.

There is a ‘supertool’ from rootjunkydsl.com. Certain things cannot be done on the 5.1.1 software, that can be with the 5.0.1. I’m no expert, but was glad mine shipped from Amazon with 5.0.1. If you get one with 5.0.1, do not enable wifi and update! Get on rootjunkydsl, get the supertool, and you will be good. (Root, recovery, google apps, etc)
BTW, it works fine with smarttiles.
Don’t be afraid to order a new 5th gen Kindle Fire due to the fact that 5.1.1 OS is now preloaded. You can now root a 5.1.1 device and install either SlimROM or CyanogenMod 12 using FlashFire. I’m not sure how it works, but it bypasses the locked bootloader somehow and magically worked perfectly for me. I have three 5th gen Fires all running CM 12 working great; two were shipped with 5.0.1 and one with 5.1.1 - they are all identical now.

My question is: How well does the tablet charge given the 600 mA Qi charger? Does it actually charge (albeit slowly) or does it just prevent it from discharging? If I take it off the wall and run it down to zero, will it eventually charge up okay?

Ok guys a buddy of mine gave me 3rd gen kindle fire for my nephew and this thing is killing me. All I am trying to do is get google play on it and for the life of me all the instructions I have found do not work. For some reason I cannot get the side load to go. Any help would be very appreciated.
Korban: I love your slick mounting job – very clean. What sort of charging pad did you use, and it looks like you’re feeding it 5 volts with the red and black wires – where does that come from and how many mA? The alternative appears to be to use the onboard micro USB port for power using a standard USB power brick in the box.
I’d like to do pretty much exactly what you’ve done, so if you’re willing to give up your secrets, I’d appreciate it.
And I asked a question earlier about the ability of the tablet to recharge from zero. Any issues with that at all? I imagine it’s slow, but I’m willing to cope with slow.
