Zigbee Locking Door Lever Recommendations 2024

It’s mid-2024. I am looking for recommendations for current Zigbee-based locking door levers.

The lock + lever must have a door lever and must not need more than one standard door lock 2-1/8" bore hole in the US (no mortise locks). I am not looking for a deadbolt.

The use case is an exterior roof door with optional entry for emergencies. The roof is very high up and has no ladders or ways to get down other than going through my townhome. If there is some fire or other emergency, someone trapped on the roof should be able to enter the exterior roof door in order to evacuate the building. However, if someone enters due to an emergency situation I want a distinct notification and maybe use the opening as a trigger to security alarms.

I think one way to accomplish what I want is to have distinct codes for keypad entry: one code for owners/renters and another code that is only for emergencies. The emergency code will be posted on, or right next to, the door. The exterior side does not need a keyway. I also do not need any other access methods: no need for phone/Bluetooth, fingerprint, retina, or anything like that. Long battery life would be helpful.

The only product I found so far is the Kwikset 912 SmartCode Electronic Tustin Lever with Zigbee Technology. It seems okay but I do not understand how it can distinguish and trigger different events (alarm/emergency condition for one particular combination) based on what numbers are entered into the keypad.

Check your local building codes: in most places in the US, emergency exit doors have to be usable by someone who is blind, a child, or someone who does not read English, “without requiring any special knowledge such as a code.” So a sign posted next to the door lock doesn’t usually meet code. But this does vary from location to location so you just have to check.

As far as door locks to meet your physical description, it’s the middle of the night here and I just happened to be up for a couple of minutes to take some meds. If I think of any more models, I’ll post later today.

And regarding being able to trigger a routine from a specific lock code being used, that’s typically not just something built into the physical device, The rules engine has to be able to use the data that the lock reports.

SharpTools can definitely do this with its paid tier. I’m not sure about other options.

Use Smart Lock Guest Access to trigger routine?

Right, that’s the rub. The lock has to expose that specific event data to SmartThings (or, to whatever system it’s connected to, in general).
