I have been searching for a smart device that can identify the position of the window latches in my house. There are plenty of options to identify if a window is open or closed, but I want to know if they’re latched or locked. Has anyone seen a device that can do this? Where would I start on having it designed or developed?
There are a few latches that have that as a built-in option, but they tend to be very expensive. What country are you in? The device selection does vary.
More commonly, depending on the specifics of the latch design, you can probably go a DIY route just with a contact sensor. These come in different sizes and shapes and it’s just going to let you know when the bolt is pushed all the way in. Several community members have done these for dumb deadbolts, for example.
Can you post a picture of the window latch so we can see the exact mechanism?
Meanwhile, in the following post, you can see how one community member made one for a manual deadbolt. The post is from almost 10 years ago, so you would probably be using different specific device models now, but the approach would be the same.
And if you happen to be in Europe, Siegenia has a smart latch that uses matter. But it is expensive per window.
I live in South Florida and had to replace all my windows in order to keep my windstorm insurance. My old windows couldn’t be opened from the outside when fully closed so a contact sensor was suitable.
Do you need it to be a simple state test of “is my window lock latched”? For example, I’ll assume that the lever pointing to the left is “latched” and any other position is “unlatched”?
Actually that window is open/unlatched, but you get the idea, I want to be able to tell which windows are latched or unlatched . Here’s another example
A contact sensor could do the trick, but it’s a matter of finding one with a small enough magnet and how to attach it to the lever. Might be a bit unsightly however.
The Aeotec door and window sensor 7 and 7 Pro have a really small magnet portion (0.31" x 0.78" x 0.43") that you might be able to somehow mount on the lever. https://aeotec.com/products/aeotec-door-window-sensor-7/
This looks Like it may work, thanks so much for your time and effort
