On my side, I think that having a “smart” thermostat with some scheduling capabilities when connected to ST is a big plus…
Especially now with all the scheduling issues within ST…
I have a SmartApp that brightens lights in a zone when there is motion or a door opens. It dims the lights after a given timeout period.
I have 6 instances of the app on one hub, (6 different lighting zones), and 8 on another hub, in another building.
When the app initializes, it starts the scheduler to run a scheduleCheck() function every minute, to turn off lights, when appropriate.
It was working for months. Then it stopped dimming reliably.
I have determined that the scheduleCheck() function stops running as scheduled.
I have also noticed that it now usually schedules at the top of the minute, i.e., the seconds are zero. This did not used to be the case. And the time between scheduled calls can be 1, 2, or 3 minutes.

To rely exclusively on ST is a bit of a challenge when we talk about essential services such as heating/cooling your home…

I realize you can integrate ST with Nest or Ecobee3 etc… but I don’t want the “logic” to overlap. Seems like the big selling points of Nest and Ecobee are their abilities to monitor presence, remotely control, and adjust to save money, but at a $249 entry price tag. Looks like you can get a simple ZWave enabled thermostat for $100, and then just use ST’s apps, sensors and logic to accomplish similar goals.
Don’t get me wrong, Nest and Ecobee are certainly sexy on the wall, but I’m curious where the features overlap with a ST integration. Do you owners of Nest and Ecobee program and schedule the actual termostat in ST or their respective native apps?
