Where is the IP camera support?

We’re working on it. Sorry. I expect to post a roadmap in the next few weeks.

Here is the integration with samsung cameras:

What do you guys think of the Netgear Arlo (http://www.arlo.com/en-us/) for an “average” user who is not interested at all in wiring for an advanced camera system?

I am giving it a try due primarily to 1 reason in that they are “battery powered”. Now I know, I know, battery powered means eventually changing out batteries and their is a cost of batteries as well, but reports from existing users state the battery life can last up to 6 months or more depending how often you view the footage and you can use rechargeable batteries of course.

I actually have a sophisticated IP camera system (not really expensive, but got a deal for $500) but being an “average” user I never actually set it up and wasted that money due to the amount of wiring, in-wall or ugly wires outside the wall for the power and line for the video always having to go back to the central DVR.

I’m not so much as interested in the local recording to a NAS as I am in the “battery powered” indoor/outdoor night vision camera that can literally being moved to a new spot in seconds so that was a GIGANTIC selling feature for me.

I do realize of course that none of these camera systems will ever be cheap for an “average” user, I mean even the Arlo with 2 camera is $350 right now and $160 for a single camera which is about around the price for one of the amazing cameras you guys have in your systems.

In terms of their cloud storage, its I think $50 for a year (5 cameras max) if you wanted that which is SOOO much cheaper than Dropcam. The core reason I started looking around the web and got to this post is because I almost purchased Dropcam since it seemed to be the ONLY supported camera with SmartThings at the moment but I absolutely did not want to pay that crazy yearly or monthly fee plus you still have the wires.

Unfortunately, as a drawback for the Arlo system, I don’t believe Netgear has exposed their API yet to 3rd parties where SmartThings could then work in integrating with it so unfortunately I imagine the Arlo system is probably last on the list of supporting which I wish it wasn’t since for an “average” user, the Arlo system seems outrageously easy to setup and get running right away which is kind of where SmartThings is always headed right, quick easy integration of all home automation devices!!!

What do you think?

Im working on an Android IP Camera device.

I do not have Arlo, but I do have the old Netgear Vue system with two cameras. I have them setup outdoors just above my front and back doors.
The video quality is not great, and the recordings are slow to start (person in frame well before video starts recording).

But even with those drawbacks, they are very effective for what they do.
Totally wireless
Long battery life (somewhere between 6 - 9 months for mine even outdoors in below freezing temps)
Just good enough video quality to get a good idea who’s at the door (mail, UPS, Kirby sales)
Responsive - I get an email from the cloud service before the pizza delivery driver rings the doorbell, most of the time.
Super easy install. One of mine is literally just sitting on the transom over the back door.

If the Arlo system can do all that, and with better video quality, I think it’s worth it. It’s absolutely no replacement for a hardwired dedicated system, but those can be very difficult (and expensive) to have installed in existing construction.

Now if they would open the API up to access from another system, that would be even better.

Thanks tslage13, I did find the post to add it under mydevice type and it works pretty good. I hope when they release it we will have the ability to view as video and not just frames  thanks again for you help …

I believe this will need to wait for hub v2. v1 cannot handle the video stream I don’t think. Not enough onboard memory I assume.

Samsung has to be on the camera priority list I would imagine

What about the Foscam cameras?

I agree with jschultz070. I have a Samsung Smartcam and can’t wait for it to be supported.

I am committed to Smartthings and have been delaying purchasing additional cameras for months waiting for the models that will integrate with this system. Let the community In on this detail so we can get ready ourselves for HubV2

@Kooltaco : Yeah, many have been asking for that for a while… I just bought another Hikvision, because I suspect that Hikvision doesn’t fit the type of product they want to work with… its more advanced and not as “plug and play”. So, once the video streaming option exists, I will probably be building a solution to get my cameras to work. (as I suspect many others will be too.) I don’t believe in DLink, Foscam, or Dropcam… which seems to be what everyone wants to use for “plug and play” simplicity.

Originally I was going to go with Micaverde and Hikvision seemed to be the gold standard over there. I like the Dropcam for simplicity and ease of use, but once you start adding multiple cameras it is going to get quite expensive. I haven’t decided on what I want to use and keep flip flopping whenever I read about something newer and better coming out. I “think” I want to go with POE cameras because it is easier to run the one wire to each location, and I have LOTS of CAT6 and have learned how to terminate the ends.

What Hikvision cameras do you use and why did you pick them?

I am using two of the 3MP cameras. I just added the 2nd (Dome, 3MP, 2.8mm). The Price was (to me) in a sweet spot with the features it offered. They are small, look good, blow Foscam and equivalents away, and the POE was a must for me, seeing as they are mounted outside. Never wanted to have to mess with wireless. I did research in other brands, but after learning a lot of 3rd parties rebrand the Hikvision camera’s, I realized they were a pretty solid company. No regrets yet.

I prefer the domes over the bullet though, because the domes have a memory card slot. Though I write to my NAS, I like having a local storage option too.

What do you use to write to the NAS. I have an underused Netgear Stora on my network and would like to make use of that rather than buying a NVR solution.
