What are you automating? (UK hub)

@Regfixit - I wondered which Risco alarm you have and if you have managed any ST integration? Simon

I love the system for little household problem solving

We have a refrigerator with a problem hinge that now requires a bit more energy to close than in the past. As a result it is now left open accidentally about once a week when its not pushed hard enough. A multi-sensor mounted on the top of the door is set to send a notification after 5 minutes of open time, this has sorted out the issue until everyones muscle memory adjusts to the new closing behaviour.

I accidentally left the clothes iron on once so i now use an outlet switch on the iron and a motion sensor in the room. the motion sensor controls the lights when entering and exiting and forces the iron outlet off after a period of no motion to ensure i donā€™t make such a bad mistake in the future.

Other than that its lighting and media through hue and harmony devices with a google home to allow voice activation.

I forgot to add that i set up a weather light using ifttt.
Every morning the hall light that automatically illuminates via a motion sensor and hue colour bulb will change its colour to represent the weather condition. Its a gross measure only looking at sun rain snow and overcast but it is helpful. I am going to see if I can integrate temperature into the equation as that will help with clothing choices in the morning.

We bought Smartthings to solve a single problem, but were already well down the road of smart home automation before picking this up, so has lead to further integrations.

The original problem was that the little oneā€™s bedroom needed to be warmer in the cold cold winter months this year - while we have a Nest, buying a second Nest to control the temperature in the one room was an excess - especially when smartthings came down to Ā£140. I snapped that up and moved the electric radiator in to the small personā€™s room, and used the multi sensor to do temperature sensing. That now turns the heater on for the room if it gets too cold in there, rather than turning it on for the whole house.

Weā€™d already bought:
A pair of Hue colour strips and the v1 Hub
A Hue white bulb to live in a lamp
A Hue white bulb for the front room lamp
The aforementioned Nest
3 Samsung M series speakers (M3 and 2x M5)

and since picking up Smartthings, weā€™ve now purchased 6 of the Ikea GU10 spots, for the bathroom - we already had it motion controlled, on a ā€˜dumbā€™ motion controller - which meant that if someone was having a bath, theyā€™d end up in the dark. Purchasing a Tradfri remote with the Spots will mean (once the light fittings are changed over) that they are dual controllable - motion from the ST motion sensor, and via the remote as a backup - as well as a ā€œBath modeā€ automating dropping down the number of lights to two, and over riding the motion sensor.

Iā€™d buy more, but itā€™s definitely all about the Wife Approval Factor!

What model is the dumb coffee machine? I canā€™t find one that has an on/off and donā€™t want to pay silly money for a wi-fi enabled one when I can use a smart plug

It doesnā€™t have an on/off switch. It has a toggle switch so I opened up the kettle, and cut out the mini circuit board. So whenever itā€™s plugged in itā€™s always on. This means the smart outlet is effectively itā€™s on off switch. It works fine!

If you donā€™t like this option charity shops can be a good source of old coffee machines with proper on off switches

Anyone in UK with motorised SilentGliss Curtain Poles/tracks?
If so, have you tried integrating them with ST?
If you have, how did you do it?
I have them and they open at a certain time each morning and close when the light level drops to near darkness.
Would just like to get them into ST somehow.

thanks Tino - thats a bit beyond me Iā€™m afraid. I think theres an american
one I might consider.

Have you come across the Microbot Push? I bought a couple in their initial IGG campaign. Itā€™s basically a motorised button that can be triggered over bluetooth. They also sell a bridge (sigh) that allows you to control it over IFTTT, amongst other things. You can then stick in on your dumb coffee machine and press the button that way.

Personally, my schedule is fixed enough that the coffee machine with a timer that I found in a charity shop for a tenner works for my needs! :coffee:

Thanks for the suggestion. I wish my routine was that scheduled :grinning: Iā€™m thinking of getting a coffee maker from America now.

I use a motion sensor on the landing, with a CoRE piston to turn on the coffee machine when it first detects motion between 6:30 and 7:00 on weekday mornings (and later at the weekends). By the time Iā€™m up and through the shower, the coffee is ready

Iā€™ve now upgraded my coffee machine to an ex-commercial one thatā€™s running off a 32A suppy (I may have a problem), which means Iā€™m now back to switching it on by hand in the mornings :slightly_frowning_face:

My Microbot Push isnā€™t tough enough to be switching cooker sockets yet!

Haha, wow Iā€™m not sure I could justify a commercial coffee machine, although you could rent it out every now and again and make your money back - I think coffee is worth more than gold by weight in the most of the UK now.

Iā€™m looking at Sensibo at the moment for my air conditioning and also looking into some external lighting, but still in the research phase. Hopefully can get some working over Christmas since thatā€™s not far away.

I will also be bulking up how many sockets Iā€™ve got soon, as use them for the Christmas period too, with the tree etc on it.

Iā€™ve been looking ont 'tinternet for an extension lead with, say, 4 sockets on it that are zigbee/z-wave that can be individually controlled through ST.
I canā€™t find anything apart from one piece of kit that never made it to the market.
Anyone else found anything like this or using something similar?

There is a Greenwave power strip that is certified for the UK, but I donā€™t know how hard it will be to find. It looks like Amazon.co.uk is no longer carrying it.

Thanks for the reply.
Thatā€™s the one I found.
I emailed them and its not in production.

The only option is 4 modules on a strip. its not ideal.

I hope AeoTech release a UK smart strip.

Thats one very expensive strip, looking at Ā£180 just for the modules!

EDIT: If you use SmartThings plugs that is

Due to finding an ebay bargain and having a tame sparky next door, it worked much cheaper than buying a quality domestic one!

My only concern is how efficient it is to heat a massive boiler for one or two cups every time, but Iā€™ve drilled holes to plumb it in now, so it has to stay for a while!

Cant you reduce the size of the boiler tank and make it only heat a smaller amount of water?
