Using Toshiba Air Conditioners with SmartThings?

Hello.
I own 3 Toshiba air conditioners and a Comfee dehumidifier that I can control from my phone, using a dedicated Toshiba app for the conditioners and SmartHome app (I understand this is pretty standard) for the dehumidifier. They also work with Google Home and Alexa.

Unfortunately they don’t appear in SmartThigns: is there anything I can do to make this happen?

There’s often something you can do by using a third-party as an intermediary, but it rarely gives you full feature control, and it sometimes requires quite a bit of technical expertise. So I don’t know if you’re interested in anything like that.

For example, if your device works with Amazon Alexa, you might be able to use that as an intermediary.

If it works with Home Assistant, that typically offers more feature control than the Alexa option, but it’s a lot more work to set up. And requires additional devices.

Eventually Matter (A new communication protocol in the industry) is intended to solve many of these issues, but it’s just beginning to roll out and doesn’t cover air conditioners yet.

I would what set of functions I’ll have; I would like to have at least some basic function on my Samsung Watch and Android Auto. I’ll have a look at the FAQs you linked, thank you.

Sensibo integration isn´t perfect but it works at least adequate for my needs with ST.
You can set temperature, mode and turn AC on/off from ST/watch. Only thing I miss would be changing fan mode between quiet/auto, but you can also do that easily from ST via IFTTT if you need to.

I found it to be an hardware component I need to buy, do I get this right? Is it ok for Toshiba?

It´s basically a “remote controller emulator” that works with every AC that has lcd remote controller. I have also an Toshiba AC in work and it works great with that :slightly_smiling_face:
And yes, you need to buy a hardware and install it on sight distance from your AC but you can easily hide it if you wanna (I hid mine behind my living room speaker).

So it uses IR? That would be a problem, since they are in 3 different rooms! :frowning:

Yeah it uses IR so I also had to buy multiple of those for all my ACs. I don´t know price range in your country, but from here you can get those from sale for about 50-60€ a pop.

Sure, I mentioned that above. But it doesn’t necessarily include all features of an individual device. What specifically were you thinking about in this context?

Also, we should note that while SmartThings Exposes devices connected to your SmartThings account to Alexa or Google Home, This is, as with most home automation platforms, a one-way integration. Alexa and Google Home do not share devices connected to their accounts with SmartThings.

You may be able to use routines on the voice assistant platforms to create some kind of integration, again, that’s mentioned in the FAQ I linked to. But it’s not all features or all devices.

(If a device uses Matter, you will then have the option to connect to SmartThings and Alexa and Google home and Apple Home and any other “matter controller“ but that’s a separate issue. And the Toshiba devices you were talking about don’t support matter at the time of this posting.)

I understand this is not a possible solution: I have my conditioners available in Alexa and GHome and I would like SmartThings to pick them from there, but I understand this is not possible, as you wrote Alexa and G Home do not expose their devices! :frowning:

I’m looking forward to buying a new Google Streamer box, to control future Matter device I’ll buy. For now I understand there is no software solution for my Toshiba conditioners.

If you aren’t afraid of DIY solutions there are options with ESP boards and MQTT.

I had this as a hobby project about 2 years ago, and it works surprisingly well.

What could be the final cost?

What is your definition of the final cost? :slight_smile: It’s less than $20 on materials. But one needs access to soldering equipment. Also, I’m running an older non-Matter protocol, so I used my RPI as the message server.

I already have soldering tools. I mean the materials / box / software to be buyed.

Maybe I’m getting this wrong, but I understand this is to build a custom module that is to substitute the WiFi module in the AC unit. Am I wrong?

I don’t remember all the details as it’s been 2 years since I read the information, but the original WiFi module is connected to the Toshiba message hub hosted on Azure. There are discussions on the Home Assistant forum regarding how to connect to the cloud, but the wired protocol is easier to hack.
