Unable to Pair Samsung Tablet with SmartThings modules

When Action Tiles died I was left with a Samsung a9 Tablet in the hallway that lost its purpose.
I decided to install SmartThings which I have used since 2017 and has 20+ devices. Should be easy, I have two phones and a P.C running SmartThings for quite awhile.
New ST download from Galaxy Store comes up on tablet but won’t pair with modules. I’ve paired many times in the past: get module, V2 hub, and phone close together, plug in known good modules with button pressed, blue light blinks. Tablet never finds the device.
Is it possible to install ST by copying it from my phone which works well and has all 20+ modules paired and running?
I miss my display in the Hallway that worked so well.

Today things went backwards. For a week or so SmartThings came up and ran, just could not connect to devices. Today the ST button is dim, and if I tap it it says, “App Disabled”. Went through Settings for quite awhile, lots of options, but nothing saying enable APPs nor did I find Manage Location. The tablet worked fine with Action Tiles but that only required a Web Browser. I did find WIFI turned off and I tapped that on, it knew my WIFI network. I had WIFI before since I downloaded ST from Galaxy Store.

I’ve been trying for days to get SmartThings to work on my Tablet, it works fine all day long and can be controlled from two phones.

Does your tablet meet the following minimum requirements for running SmartThings?

Android OS: Android 10 or newer

RAM: Minimum 3 GB RAM

Normally you would login to the Samsung tablet with the same account you use on one of your phones and SmartThings will pick up that account and find your existing installation.

If you use a different Samsung account you login to SmartThings so it is all initialised then invite this account to join your SmartThings Location from one of your phones. Then it is just a case of accepting the invite and making sure you are looking at the correct Location in your SmartThings app as each account gets a new empty one by default.

I don’t really recognise your description of pairing ‘modules’. What modules are they and why would they need pairing if they are already working with SmartThings?

For your ‘App disabled’ try looking in the tablet settings, the ‘Apps’, then ‘SmartThings’ and see if you have an enable option.

I haven’t seen enable/disable for a while. What Android version are you on? From December 22nd SmartThings only maintains it on Android 12 or above. Existing installations will still work but personally I wouldn’t bother.

Android 11 or newer.

And in a couple of days, it’s Android 12 or newer.

I have not found Manage Location in any of the many commands.

From Software Information:

One UI version 7.0

Android Version 15

Android Security Patch Level Oct 1 2025

This is a rather new Galaxy Tab A9+

Lower left corner says it it is in SAFE MODE. I have not found a way to turn that off.

There’s your problem. Reboot the device to leave the safe mode.

Whew, after replying to two letters the reply button stopped working.

I logged out and came back in and Reply is working.

Going down your list:

When I login into SmartThings from the phones all I enter is the passcode (digits) to unlock the phone. I tap
the ST button and I’m in.

I looked into my login test file and for Salesforce it says use Samsung login.
For Samsung I have email and an 8 character password. I almost never need to enter the PW,
I presume Samsung remembers my phones. I will try to login to Samsung from the tablet.
Once I get the App Disabled message fixed.

But, Smart Things used to come up on the Tablet, just could not add devices.

" pairing ‘modules " is what ST tried to do with the tablet. You bring the tablet, module, and hub in close range.
I plug in the module with the button pressed and the blue light starts blinking. I tell ST to search for local devices.
I tried for several minutes then said No Devices Found. I’ve done that often when purchasing new modules to
connect to the phones.

BTW: Most of my 20+ modules were assorted brands. I bought six modules from TECKIN because their
Advertisement said ST compatible and they were physically smaller. Would not Connect. Found their website
said nothing about SmartThings. They may connect to ALEXA but I don’t use Alexa for home control.

I looked in APPS Smartthings and the only thing unusual is under PERMISSIONS
Manage App if unused is DIM and switched off. I can’t get it to switch on.

Hello Paul,

Memory says 2.4 GB used of 4 GB.

Leo

The amount of memory looks fine.

As @Andreas_Roedl said SAFE MODE is probably your problem.

Hi Everybody,

Thank you for all the suggestions about my tablet problem and keep them coming. I’m amazed at all the trouble I’m having with a less than 1 year old tablet that ran Action Files for awhile yet my very old Galaxy G7 has run ST fine. At one point my A12 phone died and my ancient home control system (20 + devices) was completely dependent on the G7 until I bought a Galaxy A16.

Now the G7 has frozen in at the “Swipe Screen to Unlock.” point. No response to any swipe. I hold to power button and it comes up with three buttons. One is Power Off. It doesn’t work. I can’t even do the Classic Shut Down and Boot Up. I have a phone that is useless and a tablet that won’t run. Each day something in my hardware fails! I don’t dare to mess with my 3 Windows Main Computers. My only way I can turn my SmartThings devices on and off is the A16 phone or pushing the buttons on the modules. I need to take a break from electronic devices.

The device you have which is in Safe Mode needs to be rebooted to normal mode. Safe Mode prevents most apps from running and is generally only used to recover from a bad app

The device that not responding to screen touches might be able to be rebooted via the reset button. Every phone and tablet I’ve owned has a tiny hole where you can insert a pin or paperclip to force a reboot when all else fails.
