[ST Edge] vEdge Creator: a virtual device generator for end users

Just to throw a spanner in the works, I like how the Kuku Harmony developer employed a “virtual on/off” capability in his switches, so it could be monitored by a smart plug to change state without executing again, or having to have another virtual switch also.

One small note: any virtual devices, including ones created with this method, will still count against your total of 200 devices per location.

Kuku Harmony rocks, I use it as much as possible. I’ll miss it when 8t goes away.

New vEdge driver update has been pushed out on the shared channel.

This update includes 2 new requested virtual device types: smoke, alarm (@Paul_Oliver)

It also fixes the momentary virtual device. Evidently I was brain-dead when I originally included this because I was missing a state condition that is needed for automations (@orangebucket). This update should also address the issue where the button was sometimes not showing on the dashboard (@Paul_Oliver @Sakari).

All previously listed issues still apply, as there has been no Edge beta update from SmartThings yet.

The updates have not yet reached my hub. I will check again in the morning and provide an update.

Thank you for all your hard work.

Now momentary switch works like it should. But is there any way to fix dashboard icons?Everything looking as things is annoying and confusing. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I’m afraid that’s out of my hands. We’ll have to hope the SmartThings team can get that corrected sometime soon.

Is the problem only with virtual devices because other drivers I use don’t have this icon problem? And one of my virtual presence sensor is showing right icon.

All my devices that use Edge drivers started off with the correct icon and then dropped it for the generic one, with one exception. My IKEA Shortcut Button, with a driver by @iquix, retains the icon. I haven’t looked closely at what is different. It may simply be that he has an explicit ocfDeviceType rather than just using a category, or something like that.

Which driver are you using for the Ikea button?

I only have problems with virtual devices. What kind of icon you have with Ikea button? I have remote icon, but I think it should be a momentary button.

The usual remote controller button I have for all buttons. Not particularly appropriate but there is a limited range available.

Ok. That makes sense. It’d be nice if user could pick prefered icon from a list, but beggars can’t be choosers. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Them was the days… something else never carried over from classic

It is the ‘Zigbee Button’ in @iquix’s channel. The invitation link to the channel is in this post.

It only applies to the Shortcut Button. Reading the code it appears that unlike the IKEA Button DTH used for the On/Off, the Held event is being sent on button release. I was only using the button for Pressed so I don’t know if I’d find that annoying.

It was time before I even knew there was something called SmartThings.

The platform has degraded since classic and shows very few signs of regaining its glory, Edge drivers asside

Smoke and Alarm devices were available this morning. I was able to create the devices and add to Automations and STHM. I am not home so I could not do and testing.
The momentary button has a functional push button on the tile.
Initially the Smoke Detector had the correct icon, we will see if it sticks.
Initially the Alarm and Momentary Button both had genetic thing icons.
Again thank you for creating these virtual devices.

So I have sensed while browsing through threads new and old. Many have jumped the ship and I can easily understand why. I’ve been thinking about it too but Matter is coming which I have high hopes.

Actually the new Edge Drivers being quickly developed by community members and the upcoming Matter protocol both give me high hopes for the future of Smartthings.

It one point I thought I would need to switch, but I no longer feel that way.
