Anyone running SmartTiles on a eink display as a control panel?
I know there are some hackable eink readers out there.

I’ve tried it on my Kindle once; it doesn’t work very well, unfortunately, because SmartTiles uses AJAX to do minimal refreshing. Thus if you turn a lightbulb on or off, the color of the icon may not change sufficiently to indicate what the current state is.

Of course, the taps are still effective to issue commands, so that’s half the battle, perhaps.

Maybe with a customized color scheme (custom CSS), and/or some more frequent “full” wipe / refreshes it may be workable … but I don’t know if the browsers on eInk tablets have ways to force a wipe / refresh.

But that might also run down the battery faster…

Thanks for the heads up! May look into writing native Android app for full UI control.

Thanks for the update

How do you get SmartTiles to be run as a dashboard on a dedicated device so it looks like it is the only thing running and not a web page in a browser? This is on an Android device.

Start in Chrome and when on the Launcher page for your dashboard, select “Add to Home Screen” from the Chrome menu.

Other mainstream browsers have variations on this option, sometimes called “Add to Desktop”.

There are also Kiosk Mode browsers like Fully Kiosk.

I did that and all it did was create a shortcut and put it on home page. Clicking it just opens it up in browser and does not hide browser status bar or anything.

What model of device and Android and Chrome version?

LG Tribute 2
Android 5.1.1
Chrome 54.0.2840.85

It should work as I described… Try it with some other websites?

Perhaps it’s an issue with your Home Screen App?

The technique I described doesn’t work at all on Kindle Fire, for example, as sideloaded Chrome doesn’t even have the Add to Homescreen option.

Sorry I can’t help. Try the other SmartTiles Topic on CSS and Mounting.

Does the home screen need to be empty when you add it?

No. It just needs space for one new icon.

ok the issue i am having is
i have this installed on a ipad mini and every time the screen hibernates i have to log back in to use it? it never used to be like that on my other ipad before some scroat stole it, what am i doing wrong peeps

Not your fault (and not really ours…). We had to eliminate “tokenized URL logins” and replace with SmartThings IDE login as a stopgap until V6 (ActionTiles) … coming … soon(?).

See: SmartTiles v5.8: Deployed to Blue & Green Editions. Release notes, etc. (follow this Topic for updates...) for lots more details and various workaround recommendations in the meantime.

Sorry

thanks, any idea on time frame ? also i assume if i keep devise power on it will stay on ??

Leaving the device on will hopefully prevent logouts, but please see the Topic for much more detail SmartTiles v5.8: Deployed to Blue & Green Editions. Release notes, etc. (follow this Topic for updates...)

We are not publishing a release date for ActionTiles™. There’s no value in announcing dates because it would only make us look bad if we miss them due to factors outside our control. Follow our Twitter, Facebook, G+, etc. though!

time to make a coffee and have a read, thanks for your help @tgauchat

I did not see a current SmartTiles general discussion thread, so I’m posting in this slightly older one…

Above SmartTiles was described as basically either a web page or app based interface to ST. Does this mean that I could wall mount a tablet, have SmartTiles running as a browser taking up roughly 50% of the screen and then have normal Android apps displayed on the other half of the screen?

My wife is not really sold on any of this HA stuff (she just wanted some basic security stuff) and this is one of the systems/setups that I’m looking to try and pull her into the HA world. If I could have a tablet that ran and displayed her Big Over and Calendar apps along with the HA stuff, she might just buy into.

Also, from what I have read, there is no way to get the Blink cameras to display a live view to a SmartTile tile? What about Arlo cameras?

The main SmartTiles Topic is currently: SmartTiles v5.8: Deployed to Blue & Green Editions. Release notes, etc. (follow this Topic for updates...)

  1. SmartTiles (and ActionTiles) runs as a web-App (single page website), so if you’re able to run a browser in split screen mode, it should work… But I haven’t figured it out under Android.

  2. SmartTiles Video questions are supported by the Community here: SmartTiles: Video Camera Compatibility

Thanks. I’ve never looked into running a browser in split screen on Android before, so it might not be possible. I’ll have to go research what possible Android and non Android options could be out there.
