SmartThings Hub Version 2.0

Just checked my order status at the ST Shop. It shows Status: Complete, Shipment State: Backorder. As I ordered the morning of the 18th, I’m guessing (hoping?) everyone’s order shows backorder until shipped. So anxious…

I see the same thing for my order as well.

It’s pretty standard in retail that if the vendor (in this case smart things) has zero inventory in stock that all orders will be marked as backorders even if they’re expecting new inventory in the same day and some of that new inventory is already reserved for that particular order. It’s just a status that says “we couldn’t ship this to you now no matter what we did in the office.” But who knows?

“A watched pot never boils…”

Funny, we all are watching the pot and when it finally boils we scream: it’s overflowing, it’s overflowing.

[/quote]Wait a second… I might be doing this wrong. Do you watch the whole plant, or just the leaves? :innocent:

Mine says back ordered and the price on the order is now different than the original receipt. Not sure what is going on now. Oh well, wait and see.

It is because there is mention of such a tool they are working on. So, why not have it available at the time of release. Besides, a hub connects to our cloud account, so it should be easy to un/re-associate another hub. We are all aware there is nothing stored on the v1 hub, hence nothing to migrate off of the v1 hub (from what I understand).

So, in that context, it’s a bit strange to not have the ability now to “migrate” to the v2 hub without adding, re-configuring, etc. That is the line of reason; that is why what I said makes sense, regardless of comparison to any other product.

OK. I’ve read all of these posts about lack of migration tool, etc. But, I keep coming back to @Ben’s comment about there not really being a big reason to update to V2 from V1.

I just returned to my V1 equipped home, after being gone for a month or so. ST is noticeably more responsive than it was a month ago, especially my presence devices. I know from experience how much work is involved to rebuild my system (135+ devices) to a new hub. I just don’t see any reason at all to do that.

Why are all of you V1 owners so crazy to move to V2? What do you think is going to change? Do you really need that battery? I don’t get it.

True. There isn’t a lot of reasons. It will take a while before all V2 new features (USB, BLE, Video streaming, local processing) will be fully usable. By that time (with some luck) the migration tool will be available.

@bravenel, local processing is a pretty big reason. i.e. All of my house lights and sensors would have functioned in the midst of the last outage by SmartThings. So two things local processing does for you:

  1. If your internet connection goes down.
  2. or if SmartThings platform/services go down or otherwise not working.
… then your things still function! (that’s pretty important to many people  )

And do you know this from experience, or from what you’ve read here?

I’m just saying, no one really knows yet what is going to happen with this “local processing”, especially when I read above that not all apps will run locally.

Is Smart Lights supposed to show up on the dashboard? I deleted the stuff under Lights & Switches and set up new rules in the Smart Lights app, but now I don’t have the lights on my dashboard.

It will not. Smart Lights is a great solution we made to automate your lights using rules. It shows up under the normal “SmartApps” section

Ah ha. So there isn’t going to be a solution for toggling lights like there used to be? You’d have to use the Rooms or Things pages?

I’ve been doing some reading since my last post. It seems like a bunch of the dashboard categories are being deprecated. What exactly is the dashboard tab in the app supposed to show, then?

No shipping notice yet and SmartThings shop still shows back ordered. I also don’t recall seeing any charges go thru on my credit card.
I would like to see reviews with a break down of hardware.

@slagle I am pretty sure you were “not” a part of that design meeting when it was decided to remove it from dashboard!

@Sam2b Unfortunately, I wouldn’t get too excited about local processing just yet, and like you, that is why I jumped on the V2 upgrade. From what I’ve read, and recent feedback received from support, there may not be much local processing going on. You won’t be able to control the hub locally with your mobile devices, nor send or receive communications (obviously) with no internet. Events to the cloud will get queued and then sent when internet service is restored.

Smart Home Monitor will not operate locally, at least not yet. They said SmartApps that “are able to execute locally will still be able to run without internet,” but when I asked which Apps would, they said they don’t currently have a list. So how are we supposed to know? Trial & error?

They said “the radios in the hub will still function without the internet.” What does that mean…that they power up?

I’m sure they are working diligently on getting apps to be able to operate locally. But, at this point, local operation appears to be just a “capability” which, in the absence of “local-only” apps, doesn’t offer much functionality. I guess it’s back to “hurry up and wait!”

So far the only app that’s been noted to run local (this from several sources) is the new "Smart Lighting"
Now does it run local when you’re using custom switch and dimmer device types like I am?, Stay tuned, as I do not currently know.
