(I am now dependent on text-to-speech technology, and trust me, you do not want to try to code groovy with text to speech! )
While smartthings would definitely benefit from a rules engine, you can certainly use it without doing your own coding. You may use some custom coding created by other people, but it’s pretty much just a cut-and-paste process. And you can do a lot of things without looking at code at all.
We don’t know exactly yet with the interface will be like for V2, but you don’t have to code in order to use SmartThings. You may have to be patient and wait while the people who do code talk to each other and figure out some good solutions for you, and then, as I mentioned, you may have to do some cut-and-paste. But the community is great, and you can definitely get by without doing your own coding.
I didn’t choose smartthings as a coding platform. I knew I wanted both zigbee and zwave devices, I wanted presence detection even though it ended up not working the way I had originally planned, I wanted an IFTTT channel, and I wanted some voice control. And I got all of that.
So while setting up sophisticated rules and schedules may not be simple, it’s usually possible, and with help from the community, it’s possible without having to be a coder.
You’d be suprised what is already developed. You may not need to develop anything. There are very creative people using smartThings that have done things without writing a single line of code.
Take out the words “very creative” and that’s pretty much about me. I am not a coder but you can pretty much get all the apps for your need thanks to the awesome community and developers.
Well I just got my support email and I’m quite disappointed. Yes, @April says it’s a different deal, but damn it’s a crappy one. It’s for a free smart plug and that’s it. No motion sensor, no open / close sensor.
As a V1 owner, I’m miffed that ST has decided to penalize V1 owners who didn’t open, read, click, and buy the V2 hub in the six hours after the email went out. We all have real life things going on and being on top of email isn’t a priority. Well, I lost out and I’m sure a bunch of you did too.
What likely happened was this entire promo was bungled. The code was likely leaked to SlickDeals or the word spread. Then an influx of orders come in and there’s no way to verify if they’re legit V1 owners. I mean, how else do you “sell out” of an upgrade bundle when you know how many hubs are already on the market??
I can understand if I sat on the email for a week but the speed in which the bundle sold out shows there was demand but also a problem with the promo’s controls in making sure it was ONLY for existing V1 owners. But I’m sure ST will never own up to that.
This, combined with the fact that there’s ZERO migration tools to let me move my 30+ devices and the shit-ton of apps I have, means I may not even take advantage of this 2nd chance offer. Oh, and I have to use this penalized offer by the 31st. No rush or anything.
Disappointed, especially since I’ve been with ST since right after the Kickstarter. This isn’t how you treat customers. But whatever. First world problems and all that, right?
Not that this makes your experience less disappointing, but when Wink bricked my hub to a fault of their own, they offered me a 50 dollars credit to their store, but left me out in the woods with almost 100 devices and no help to move them.
You, my friend, need a beer! I’m a little surprised they did anything for those who were late to the game. You’ve got to be around for these things or you miss out. That’s pretty much all of life right?
