Samsung Smartthings Hub 2018 not getting to setup phase

Hi all, long time occasional reader, first time poster.

After a long period of being in between housing situations, I have finally broken out my Samsung Smartthings Hub 2018 to setup in my new apartment. Unfortunately, after 2-3 years of sitting dormant, it appears to be having some real issues updating and getting back to the setup phase after a hard reset.

Initially, I had the hub just sitting on its own with intentions of connecting it over Wifi. After 2 hard resets, the hub would always come back to a blinking or solid blue light. I figured the hub was attempting to update but couldn’t because it did not have any connection. I grabbed an Ethernet cable and hardwired it, which got me to the blinking magenta phase, then back to blinking/solid blue, and then eventually just off. This has to be my 3rd factory reset, and now Im just stuck on a solid magenta light.

The hub does have an IP address from my router, but loses the IP when the light turns solid or turns off.

Ive read bits and pieces of lots of other threads regarding similar issues, but have not seen anything beyond a hardware reset as a solution. Does anyone have other ideas? My feeling is that a firmware update may need to be forced on the device.

Solid Magenta → Applying update
Blinking Magenta → Downloading update
Solid Blue → Hub is claimed** but has no internet or server connection.

you are connecting it to the same account used previously with the hub? did you remove the hub from your account before moving it to storage?

start with your router… that it is not being blocked or on isolated VLAN? losing the IP# sounds odd.

factory reset:

  • Disconnect power from your Hub
  • Press and hold the recessed reset button in the back of your hub.
While holding down the reset button, power up your Aeotec Smart Home Hub.
  • Continue to hold down the reset button until the LED turns solid yellow (about 30 seconds after power). The LED should be flashing yellow during this time.
  • Release the reset button when LED lights up solid yellow for at least 3 seconds.
  • After about a minute, your LED should flash red**/** green to indicate it is ready to be setup. You will have 30 minutes to start the setup process.

you are the second person not able to reconnect their v3 hub after sitting in storage for some time.

I did not remove the hub from my account before placing in storage. If I factory reset the device, shouldn’t it go back to setup phase though and disassociate from any previous homes? I can say with confidence that I have done the factory reset steps multiple times and have been ending up with the solid blue light each time. The solid magenta light is a new development on the latest factory reset after Ethernet hardwire connection. It sat on the solid magenta for about an hour or more, so I unplugged power and am waiting for it to try again. It’s currently back to blinking magenta, blinking blue, blinking magenta. It also sometimes blinks red (what does that mean?), and sometimes turns off entirely.

I am not confident in the network setup. I have done no VLANing or any changes whatsoever. It’s the base xfinity modem router combo and I have been having trouble connecting my other smart devices to it (Nanoleaf panels, ESP32 running WLED, etc). It could be a network issue… maybe I try deploying a different router to test.

Update: after rebooting the hub LED just turned off after 10-15m of magenta, blue and red blinking. The green and orange Ethernet activity lights are now blinking together on and off. The router no longer shows the device as online and the IP lease is gone.

  • if android, clear the app cache
  • try a different Ethernet cable
  • try a different port on Router
  • if the IP# is disappearing - I lean to some Router setting
