Samsung Developer Conference (SDC21) (October 26, 2021)

This Is a very important question for sure.

The response i’ve gotten so far from PR is that Matter is being implemented as a Controller. By reading between the lines, i’m going to take that as z-wave and zigbee devices will NOT be exposed to other Matter controllers.

:frowning:
I hope that’s not the case

Where is Routine Creator??!!!

Reading between the lines here as well, but wouldn’t that mean that they are essentially trying to kill the z-wave and zigbee standards? If so, that’s a pretty big ask at this point…

beta hasn’t released yet AFAIK

Not really. It means zwave and zigbee devices will work within SmartThings as they always have. They just won’t be exposed to other Matter controllers like HomeKit, Google Home, etc.

They also won’t be supported with the “hubs” that will be built into other samsung devices…

yeah, that’s really annoying. sounds like they are just a Matter LAN controller to feed Matter device data to the SmartThings cloud. I’m going to assume they won’t run automations locally, either, even for LAN devices. :-1:

Yeah, and it’s not like it can’t be done. Philips Hue and Aqara Have already announced that their hubs will expose at least some Zigbee devices to Matter.

Of course, those same hubs already work locally with HomeKit, so it may be easier for them since they aren’t starting from square one.

The first Matter-compatible Aqara child devices will include the latest sensors, wall switches, and smart plugs. Integration of Matter will not disrupt current Aqara smart homes as users will continue to enjoy the same features and benefits of Aqara’s existing Zigbee devices.

  • The Philips Hue Bridge smart lighting hub will be automatically enriched with Matter, making all connected Philips Hue products compatible with this new industry-unifying standard

It does really make you wonder what SmartThings’ long term commitment to z-wave is. Z-wave long range is coming down the pipe, SmartThings no longer has its own hardware with z-wave radios. I wonder if Aeotec had any verbiage in their contract with Samsung that they had to support future z-wave technology the in hub firmware they develop for them?

One thing I also don’t quite understand regarding their Matter announcements are whether Samsung devices will be Matter certified themselves. i.e. wil a Samsung TV be Matter certified itself so it shows up in HomeKit? All the press jargon is about getting Matter devices into SmartThings, but nothing mentions the other way around.

Or whether the existing SmartThings hub (v2) will support Matter…or if you will have to upgrade to a different hub?

I have to believe that someone is working on a Matter driver for Edge for LAN-based devices. If not, as soon as the spec is publicly available, you can be sure someone in the community will write one. You may need some specialty BLE hardware for provisioning (from what I can gather), but I suspect that will be an optional part of an implementation.

Not yet, there’s not enough detail yet to get started. You have to know how smartthings is going to handle it because that will be the controller. I mean you could play around with Lua statements, but you’ll have no idea what will actually work.

I meant someone in the SmartThings team - they have full access to the in-progress spec, as do all members.

Matter itself doesn’t require BLE, it can run over Zigbee, Wi-Fi, thread, lots of choices. But again it will be up to smartthings what it’s going to support. From everything they’ve said so far it will very likely be thread, but they have to activate that antenna first. It’s just way too early in the process to know what’s happening. you wouldn’t need any special hardware for a Wi-Fi device, though. That would be similar to the LAN implementation of the hue bridge.

I’ve read in a few places that BLE can be used for provisioning, but it didn’t sound like it was going to be a mandatory thing.

But the spec isn’t done yet.

Anyway, Wi-Fi LAN first would be my guess for ST. Because they can use that with the TV and refrigerator “hubs” as well. We’ll see.

Yes! Support for Samsung Appliances will always be top priority :smirk: So we’ll see how quickly they start building in Matter into those products, and what form it takes.

They are. Let me find the slide…
