SAFETY WARNING - WeMo Light Switches

I want to share an issue I have been experiencing that is a potential safety issue.

I’m no fan of WeMo but I still have a few in-wall light switches and plugin outlets. I have been phasing them out over time.

Some time ago I had one WeMo light switch start hissing. Things fail so I removed it and moved on. However, in the last two weeks I have had two more WeMo light switches start to hiss loudly. They continued to work and perhaps posed no danger but I won’t take the risk. I have removed them and thrown them out. My fear is they are arcing internally.

If you have any, I would recommend that you check them. I have one more in service I am going to remove tomorrow even though it’s not making any sounds.

I thought this was going to be about the fact that WeMo is shutting down its cloud service in 3 months. :man_shrugging:t2:

>After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to end technical support for older Wemo products, effective January 31, 2026. After this date, several Wemo products will no longer be controllable through the Wemo app. Any features that rely on cloud connectivity, including remote access and voice assistant integrations, will no longer work.

Renamed thread title to be more specific.

I’m a Master Electrician. If you have any electrical switch that is “hissing” it’s arcing inside. Probably cheap internal contacts that have become coated with carbon. Replace them immediately, they will only heat up and build more resistance that will cause more heating until something gets hot enough to burst into flames. The majority of my electrical work is insurance repair and I see houses burn down and lives destroyed from a simple issue such as this.
