I also noticed that a rule I have to run a virtual check switch, using every, stopped working over the weekend. Deleted the rule and uploaded again and it started working. I vaguely remember that something like this happened last year also.

  5. Select Menu (⋮) and choose Settings
  6. Toggle on Account Data Access
  7. Select the time period and confirm - In this step, please select “Until turned off”, once the team finishes, we’ll let you know so you can disable it again.

Our current suggestion is that a hub restart (connect and disconnect) will allow the routine to be scheduled again and should start running as expected.

These are local rules that run directly on the hub so we don’t have a ton of visibility in what went wrong.The team is already aware of the problem and they will be monitoring the operation.

If the problem happens again it is important to share the Hub logs.

  1. Provide the Hub logs through the my.smartthings.com:
  2. In the my.smartthings, enter “your hubs”
  3. Enter the corresponding Hub
  4. Click on “Dump Hub Logs”
  5. Change the reason for requesting hub logs if needed
  6. Click on “Dump Hub Logs”
  7. Confirm that the request is submitted
    Note: If you have more than one Hub, the name of the one involved in the issue.

The problem will probably happen again next year, when we switch from summer time to normal time. Hopefully the team has found the cause of the problem by then.

Problem like this is usually only noticed hours or days after the problem started.

This problem has been reported as long as I can remember–and I’ve been around the forum since 2016. “The Team” hasn’t found the problem and probably never will. It happens only twice a year and most people probably don’t even notice or just think, “Hmm! Something’s not right. I’d better reboot!” I doubt it gets any priority, considering all the other tasks being worked at any give time.

Best bet is probably to reboot. The last few times I experienced a power outage–which probably caused a reboot if the UPS died before power was restored–I left it alone and watched what happened. Time-driven routines were off by some number of minutes each day–but not the same amount of time. Eventually, perhaps 3-4 days later, things got back into sync.

The switch from Daylight to Standard Time is a simple calculation. But it probably isn’t implemented in a way that re-writes existing timers. (That’s just a guess.) Once the timer fires, it (probably) calculates a new value, which may or may not be correct. It would be interesting to just let it go and see what happens during the switch. This year, unfortunately, we had a thunderstorm that caused a power outage in the night causing the hub at this location to reboot–so the experiment will have to wait until Spring… :joy:

I have only had SmartThings for 3 years. I have been actively using Rules API rules for 2 years. This type Every X minute rules I have used for only a few months.

These Rules API functions Every X minute have very few users and that is probably why the ST Team is not interested in fixing the problem.

I rebooted my hubs and now everything works again.

I have one hub as a spare part. I have used it for testing my own drivers. This hub can be left for ST Developer Support to explore for a longer period of time.

You can see what happened from my first post’s logs. The Rules API rule ran a few times during the transition to standard time and then it stopped running. Even though the time stamps are the same, the increasing values ​​show that the rule is executed.

This is pure speculation, but for fun let’s look at it this way…

A common way to implement multiple timed events is an ordered, linked list. For example, it might have a field with time to wait until the next event (not time-of-day, but probably seconds to wait until the event), a pointer to the next entry in the list, and a pointer of some sort to the rule to be executed when the time is up. This means one ‘check’ of the first item in the list every time period (maybe every second, or minute, or however it’s implemented), rather than individually checking some number of timers–it’s way faster to check for the next event than to check, say, 50 timers to see if each is expired.

Let’s suppose a seasonal time change occurs: in autumn we “fall back” or back up the clock an hour. Let’s also suppose the person implementing the routine that handles the linked list of timer events doesn’t think to check for a negative number! Either the code throws an exception–not expecting a negative number of, say, seconds–and the timer routine chokes OR the calculation results in a stupid out-of-range time until the next event happens (like 23 or 25 hours).

None of us have the patience to wait 23 or 25 hours. :yum:

So, we reboot and life goes on…

As an aside, I once had a problem handed to me “that only happens after a week of up-time” on a product sold to the military. Most customers flew the device on a jet: no sweat, the aircraft never flew that long. Then a unit was sold to a customer that put it on a ship that was at sea for months at a time. (They learned to reboot every so often–but were particularly peeved the product wouldn’t handle the job.)

Several engineers had attempted to fix the problem–but no one apparently really understood the issue. I put in some debugging code that could be accessed from a serial console. One function would “adjust the clock” by whatever number of seconds I wanted. So I gave it 6 days, 23 hours worth of seconds–and the problem was diagnosed within the hour. It takes creative thinking and understanding of what is going on at the global level, as well as at the individual function level.

Sure enough, the problem was that a stored value overflowed. Easy fix.

Just like the time change problem could be fixed if someone understood the whole picture. :roll_eyes:

In my opinion, the platform and hub should use only UTC time internally and local time only in the user interface. In this case, the internal clock never needs to be moved.
