Rule Builder iOS app

The routines will only show up in the actions (then do this), not in the triggers (if this happens). Is this the problem?

Hmmm…this brings up some interesting scenarios. Should a Routine be a trigger? You already have Modes, which are “typically” changed when a routine is executed. But, that was more under the old way of calling them Hello, Home actions. I can see routines being positioned more as an execution script that may or may not include a mode change. Just the simple name change makes me look at them from a slightly different perspective.

SmartThings does not provide a way to “subscribe” to Routines, so there is no way to trigger a rule with a routine. We can only do this indirectly using a mode, or something else that the routine changes.

Ah, well that answers that. Perhaps a tag of @mager to note a possible feature request? (Andrew, you only need to read up two or three posts to catch this)

I believe Mager left SmartThings :frowning: so that might not be the right name to mention

Oh nos… :open_mouth: How about @slagle? Maybe he can figure it all out! Tim, look at the last few posts above this one!

New info found in another thread

Cool, thanks Greg. I hadn’t seen that. We will add support for this in a future update.

It looks like the ability to subscribe to Routine events is brand new – as in Jim just posted about it an hour ago. Nice find and a great feature addition!

Guess, you just need to ask the right people.

Nice. I thought I double checked the documentation before I posted that earlier.

You mean your Remote Controlerr has it? support the developer!

Latecomer here…

I just picked up the ST v2 and a number of things are difficult to pull off. one of the reasons i like the ST is the ability to run everything locally and not depend on the ST cloud.

If we use the paid version, will everything run locally, or will it require cloud processing?

Hi Buzz. If you search on the forums for local processing, you’ll see that currently, very little can run locally, only the Smart Lighting app from SmartThings. Eventually, SmartThings is expected to open up local processing to more SmartApps. When it becomes open to third party apps, we will do whatever we need to do to get SmartRules to run locally. Unfortunately, I don’t know when that will be or what limitations there may be, I can only say that we too would like our rules to run locally when possible.

EDITED: I should add that there is no third party server here, your rules do not rely on any other services besides the SmartThings cloud, so you don’t need to worry about any additional cloud-to-cloud type of interaction. They run just like any other SmartApp.

Awesome! Thanks for the reply. I bought the app and am playing around with it right now (looks great so far!).

If I set a rule up with the app for a lighting event, does that lighting event all happen locally (since Rule Builder isn’t a separate cloud)? I.E. Does Rule Builder create the lighting event in SmartThings so that ST handles it locally, or does ST handle that in their cloud?

I’m fine with most stuff processed online, but lighting is the one thing I want locally to reduce failure due to spotty internet (which happens more than it should in our area).

Thanks for the great work!

For now that will still happen in the ST cloud, because only their Smart Lighting SmartApp is available for local execution. Eventually, I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t run locally, but its entirely dependent on SmartThings opening it up.

Got it. Thanks! That’s exactly what I needed to know.

Thanks for the heads up.

Looking forward to this functionality in the future!

@obycode sorry if this has been answered at some point, tried searching through this thread and what I’m looking for was pulling a lot of unrelated stuff.

I bought the app, want to set up two rules based on the different combinations of my wife and I leaving or staying at home.

Setting the first rule up for one of us leaving and one staying seems to make sense. But for both of us leaving, will this work as I read it?

If any of these happen: Husband leaves, Wife leaves
while all of these things are true: Husband is not present, Wife is not present
then do this: run “all gone routine”

Will this execute sequentially? Will the app register that I left, then check the two “not present” conditions, or will it poll the conditions first, realize I am present, then check the “happen” section?

I do not believe this will work. It looks like if husband or wife leaves while they are not present do this.

I have similar rules:
If Sean leaves while Joy (my wife) is not present then run this Routine

I also flip that for my wife leaving while I’m not present.

When we get home:
If Sean or Joy arrives while Away (mode) is active then run this Routine

I also have each run times two as I also test for sunset or sunrise as I wish to do different things depending if it is light outside or not.

I hope this helps. If you have questions either I or most everyone else in this community would be happy to help.
