āThe Smart Home Hub 2 makes setting up a smart home simpler than ever.ā
Unless you use Z-Wave. That aside, what is the excitement around this hub?
Smaller footprint, double the memory (back to par with the V2). ![]()
And the official announcement says this:
70% faster processing handle complex automations and large device networks smoothly.
For me, latency has simply been cut in half - and consistently so.
Previously, there would occasionally be a noticeable delay when turning on a Thread bulb using a Zigbee button or an Aqara H2 wall switch. It didnāt happen often, and it was minor, but it did happen. Iāve had the V4 for a while now, and I still catch myself smiling sometimes because the response time is just so low.
I spent several years working at a well-known music software company, where I became extremely sensitive to latency issues.
Anyone know when is samsung opening pre-orders? All you can do is sign up on that smartthings site to be notified when available. I couldnāt find it on shop samsungāthey still have the v3 hub, though they donāt describe it with a version at all. Typical confusing Samsung crap e-commerce
. Oh, and of course itās out of stockā¦
Aeotec store also has the v3 hub listed but sold out. No v2/V4⦠oh yeah, thatās not confusing naming at allāllike do their product marketing teams even talk to each other??
Aeotec said product starts arriving at retail partners Oct 30.
SmartMatters.co does have a pre-order page with estimated delivery Nov 6-11 but they charge $8.99 shipping to US-GA plus one screen had a $12.99 tariff charge but another didnāt? I think Iāll wait a couple of days and see if it shows up available on either of the other sites.
Iād rather get it from Samsung hopefully with free shipping despite their abysmal sales portal. Seriously, I really really really hate that site.
Itās 30th of October now. No sign of the new hub on Amazon, or indeed anywhere in the uk other than Vesternet. Surprised not to see it for sale anywhere else by now ![]()
Update: itās now on back order with Vesternet, so now not available anywhere in uk regardless of price.
Samsung US store now has the new hub in stock & available for $119.99 with free shipping. I was able to use some reward points and knock off an extra $20 so happy about that. But their dreadful e-commerce system is already saying delivery is delayed so weāll see how that goes.
I recently simulated a failure by cutting power to my primary hub in the hub group. The secondary hub successfully took over, and the Z-Wave devices also switched without any issues. I wanted to correct my earlier statement: Thread, Zigbee, and Z-Wave all transitioned and operated properly during the several hours that my primary hub remained offline.
Your secondary hub is which version?
I eventually ordered from vesternet, even though it seemed pricier than elsewhere. Curious however, about 6 weeks later, Iām surprised to see that nowhere else in uk is selling it other than vesternet, even Amazon. Unless vesternet have exclusive rights for a while
Iāve received and installed a new Home Hub 2 and migrated from the 10 year old v2. And itās very disappointing and overall a waste given the age difference in the hardware.
1). Lack of Z Wave support wasnāt a showstopper for me, But still it was an option with the old v2. And I have 2 choices for my few Zwaves. Bin them or keep a hub just for them. Which is what I did.
-
Iām already reaching the DriverSoft limit. I didnāt hit this on the older v2. I would had expected this to me increased over the old model. Itās full of drivers not required, as was the older model. These shouldnāt be forced down if they had to limit the available driver limits.
-
when connected to the router directly via LAN cable itās rebooting hourly and is very unstable as it the thread network. Strangely when connected via WiFi itās great. No idea why by it seems to be overloaded when connected via LAN.
-
Given the 10 year gap in the hardware the 300 device limit needs to be revised in line with the hardware capacity.
5). Hard to know for sure, But the range of the ZigBee connection seems to be less. Of course this can be easily extended, But I would have expected it to be at least on par with the older hardware, and given the lack of Z Wave support. I would have expected more.
6). Should be able to communicate locally with other ST hubs (the one running Z wave). But canāt.
And on a good note, the unify option for the Thread network should mae it more stable.
Being able to Grouo the Hubs and TVs again should help extend the network. And I assume (hope). The network will fail over to the secondary hubs if required. Like Aqara ?
Iām not sure thereās much more hardware capacity. On memory front V3 has half the memory of V2. V4 has double the memory of V3, in other words, same memory as V2.
Regarding speed, V4 is announced as 70% faster than V3, itās not even double the performance. But V3 was already slower than V2, so⦠not that much improvement compared to V2?
@Jeff_Gallagher had a really interesting in-depth report on his experiences with the new home hub two which I felt deserved to be called out into its own topic, so I have moved those posts. Hereās that discussion.
Personally for stuff like security and irrigation I wouldnāt be confortable phasing off z-wave for any 2.4ghz radio protocol, I had tons of those devices drop connection, you canāt always control all the noise on the 2.4 frequency.
Even though Iām about to finish the nearly complete migration to Thread, Iāll keep a few (bridged Matter) Tapo motion detectors and contact sensors and run them alongside the Thread devices - because they operate on 868 MHz. That adds redundancy to the security system.
I am hoping Aeotec gives more thought to zwave removal and puts it back into a v5 hub. many of us cannot give up our zwave investment, we donāt want multiple hubs, and new vendors such as homey pro are uniting all existing radios with thread border router included. would like to know aeotecās hub roadmap.
