Just saw Chamberlain’s new WiFi garage door opener online and it looks like it works with Wink. Wondering if anyone might be able get SmartThings working with it? Looks like this webpage is encouraging it… Would be nice to just have ST work directly with the opener versus having to install a relay switch to control it.

[OBSOLETE] MyQ Garage Door Device Type

I just finished and published a complete Device Type for integrating MyQ garage doors into SmartThings. You can get the code for it here: It’s a 1.0 version, but it should be pretty stable. The newest major release of the SmartThings app has caused a few issues, specifically some odd behavior when reporting the door status while on the overall “Things” window; refreshing or opening the detail view for the door will display the correct status. For this to work you will need to have doors that you can already control via the MyQ mobile app, as well as the username, password and door name’s used in MyQ. Oh that’s right, the new v2 hub is supposed to have WiFi capability, right? Actually, I just looked back here at the blog post they put up about the new hub and I noticed it says they’re going to have an official integration available with this Chamberlain opener. Has this not happened yet, hence the need to use this custom device type? Any idea if other garage door opener brands are adding this functionality?

Chamberlain is the only one I know of right now.

You could also use a dry contact relay.

LFM-20 Evolve for garage door

It seems there are a few posting regarding controlling garage door using the evolve relay. But is there a simple documentation? There is also a video by smartthings showing the garage being controlled, but for a not so techy person , how does one accomplish that? Isn’t therea simple plug and play device? There are many options in the market like gogogate or mio, for a non techy much easier to go that route but than would that integrate with smartthings?

The LFM20 Evolve relay is for lighting fixtures. That’s what it’s UL rated for. It is not UL rated to control a garage door opener. I know a lot of people use it that way, but you should be aware that that’s what you’re doing.

There are several alternatives that are UL rated for unattended garage door opening, including the Linear GD00Z, which is quite popular in the community

I’ve modified the ST default “Z-Wave Garage Door Opener” to better work with the “doors & locks” module. As far as I know, this would only be useful for the linear GD00Z device (and variants including the Iris opener.) This will allow you to select your garage door device as both the “open/close sensor” and the “garage door opener relay.” At that point, from within the “doors & locks” module, you can use “open and close it remotely” (and perhaps the other sub-modules that open/close the door.) All this does is to add the “relay switch” and “momentary” capabilities to the type, stubs on()/off(), and defines push() to either open or close the door (depending on it’s current state.) It’s not a perfect implementation, as the “doors & locks” module might show the door as being “stopped” wh…

And the Telgard, which is new, and so far most of the people saying that they have one have ties to that company. But certainly worth checking into.

Since options are always good, we should also mention the Linear GD00Z, which is also UL listed to the UL325 standard for garage door controllers, has the same features you mention. @garyd9 has a device type for it that a number of community members are using. So just two competing choices with similar features. There are some differences, of course. But any garage door controller which meets the UL325 standard should have the warning before closure and the 2 retries then lockout.

You don’t need “WiFi” on the hub to control WiFi devices, as long as the hub is on the same network (LAN) as your WiFi router. In other words, Hub V1 can already communicate with many WiFi devices.

Yep. If there are cloud to cloud services, you can usually do it. But not all LAN options, and not websockets.

Very true. Totally depends on how you have it hooked up as well. My circuit does not control the motor. If you were providing power to the motor through the relay I would be worried. In my case I am just using the dry contact to trigger the motor.

I know UL doesn’t just test the power rating either. They do things like how reliable is it at opening the garage etc… So if that data is important then definitely go with the UL rated garage toggle.

There’s more to it than that, though. The UL 325 standard requires an audible alert before the door closes in unattended mode. MyQ has that as delivered by Chamberlain (although some of the community supplied code bypass that). The Linear and Telgard UL-listed garage door controllers also have it. Using the LFM 20 probably does not. How important people consider those kinds of safety features varies.
