Interesting way of monitoring a gas water heater or furnace

I was looking at our power vent water heater to figure out how to track when it was running. The steel end of gas valve coil was exposed and a quick test with a steel bolt showed it was magnetized when the valve was open. I put a Z-wave magnetic door sensor on the valve with the end of the valve coil next to the area the magnet would normally go. It works great showing “closed” when the gas valve is energized.

Cool!

to do an unpowered gas heater you could monitor the flue temp. To keep from melting the sensor, you’d want to put some insulation between it and the flue.

Thanks. I tried it. Works greats.
