I suspect these are now discontinued, but I’m going to have a little rant anyway. I’d guess I’ve bought at least ten, perhaps more of these, predominantly based on price and compatibility with SmartThings. Over the last few years the have in turn failed. Becoming non responsive even after a full rest, or, more likely, the relay fails and the outlet flicks off and on repeatedly a few times per second.
Today I had another fail, this means I’m down to two left, it’s not just bad luck when that many fail, it’s poor build or design or both.
The point of this post, other than a rant:
1: if yours fails, it’s not just you.
2: I’d strongly advise putting anything important or valuable on these outlets , eg TVs, appliances generating heat, anything you care if it broke.
I had a considerable number of these with cost being the main driver once I’d dumped my Aqara devices. They had one or two issues but firmware updates eventually dealt with that. I have had several fail with the relay symptom. This didn’t seem to harm the devices plugged in, which indeed just seemed to behave as if they were off, but they seemed to represent an unnecessary risk and I started moving them them off the frontline, as it were. Recently I have been ripping them all out and I have just one left in use.
I also ripped out all my Tradfri motion sensors a while back as they were a pain in the backside with their false detections. Mind you their replacements are a bit over enthusiastic so I can’t win.
Somewhat ironically the only Tradfri device I am still using in any numbers is the On/Off switch. I had to withdraw them for a long time because of the battery issue, having got through hundreds of batteries in the meantime. It took a long time before the Zigbee firmware in the hub reached a version that was believed to be free of the bugs that were thought to be causing the problem but they eventually became usable again.
I had 2, lost one to the flickering relay failure. Since I bought them primarily as repeaters, they were never in mission critical usage. The remaining one controls an under counter light strip in our breakfast area, so not a crisis if (when) it fails.
Mine had infrequent switching and v light loads (led strips, lamps etc ).
My oldest smart plug is a Kasa WiFi plug, it’s been going since 2019/20 switching on and off a lamp on a motion sensor. It’s had way more use than any of the ikea ones.
I also have a couple of tplink wifi ones, they are mostly ok but occasionally go offline and need power cycled to bring them back.
I bought both TRETAKT and INSPELNING. Both were recognized by ST, however due IKEA reporting Level capability they show that too. Also INSPELNING has power/energy reporting issues. I still have old Ikea TRADFRI outlets that still work fine, even under heavy loads. Only issue with TRADFRI is that there is no physical switch button.
I have returned both TRETAKT & INSPELNING, and replaced them for Third Reality with power/energy monitoring for less money (pack of 4). No regrets
