Having trouble connecting Smartthings V3 hub to any Z Wave item

I bought a house in which the seller had a Smartthings hub V3 included, along with 3 Schlage smart deadbolt locks (1 is BE468, 2 are BE469), a couple dozen GE ZW3005 smart light switches, and several DOME DMMS1 motion sensors. All of these were setup around 2016-2017, so it’s not new stuff. Not much information was given by the seller about this equipment and its been several months that I have been in the home. Due to a lot of other commitments, I am finally able to start setting up my smart home system to monitor the doors, set up some routines with the lights, etc.
I did a hard reset on the Smarthings hub. It connects fine with my Ring doorbell and my Tapo/Kasa smart plugs and cameras. I cannot, however, get it do connect to any of the stuff that I have that uses Z-Wave.
The Schlage locks (BE468, BE469) are older Z-Wave only, not Wifi or Z-Wave Plus.
The GE ZW3005 are circa 2016 Z-Waze switches.
The Dome DMMS1 motion sensors are Z-Wave Plus.

I’ve tried to do the Z-Wave Exclusion through the Smartthings app. I’ve tried to reset and pair the dock locks, the light switches, and the motion sensors. I’ve positioned them within a foot of the hub, yet I cannot get to hub to show or connect any of these devices. What am I doing wrong? I feel like this is beyond complicated and/or I just have outdated devices. Is there any way to get 1 or all of these devices connected? Thanks!

Not sure where to start. What is the model number of the hub? I only ask because you mentioned 2016-2017 and the V3 was not released until 2018 so just verifying.

You listed Ring and Tapo/Kasa - those are cloud to cloud integrations that don’t require a hub… only the app. Unless you used the custom Edge driver for Kasa but I doubt that is the case.

Let’s start by pointing you to the Advanced Web App to check the status of z-wave for the hub. report back the findings. also what is the frimware version?

Hi jkp,

The model number is IM6001-V3P01. The Ring and Kasa/Tapo are linked through their apps, like you said. I have never been to the Advanced Web App for Smartthings and when I check, it the firmware version is blank. Under device firmware updates, it says “don’t allow” (I didn’t set that up). Scrolling down it says No Characteristics to Display, No Driver Channels, No Installed Drivers. Further down it says this device does not support Zigbee, Z-wave, or Thread.

How do I restore the hub at this point? Thanks!

If the hub has been offline since before March of this year… then the most likely scenario is the security certificate expired. Here comes the fun part. You should follow the steps to block NTP port 123 udp as outlined in the following thread: https://community.smartthings.com/t/troubleshooting-smartthings-hub-2018-and-aeotec-hub/298332

remember to unblock the port after onboarding the hub in the app and wait awhile for the hub firmware to update. You can check that in the app or in the Advanced Web App (AWA) that I linked in my first post.

Zwave devices that are connected to one hub have to be “excluded” from that network before they can be added to a new network. (Otherwise somebody could hijack your devices from outside your home, just by adding them to a new controller.)

When you reset the hub, it loses its old network credentials so none of the Z wave devices that were previously communicating with it can do so anymore.

So once you have the hub up and working, you then have to individually exclude each Z wave device from its old network so it will clear that information from its internal records and then you’ll be able to add it like it was a brand new device to your hub’s new network.

Thank you both for your help. I have spent hours on this to no avail. This is absolutely ridiculous and I’m ready to scrap my hub at this point.
I was finally able to log on to my tp-link router page (after having to reset my modem and router), but there is not an option to block the NTP port 123 udp (or whatever tf that is). Do I have to download some logs on a USB stick and then forward that to Samsung support? I’m a dozen hours into this at this time and I can imagine another more only to find out this won’t work. Sorry about the frustration, but I feel like I wasted a day and a half on this and have gained nothing. Any advice at this point? Thanks!

My goal is to connect to the 2 dozen ZWave light switches, smart door locks, and motion sensors. Is it best to just replace the Smartthings hub with a different hub? If I buy a new Aeotec hub (the one with ZWave, not V2 which does not), will the firmware be up to date and I’d be able to connect to my devices? Thanks again!

do you have the ability to block domains? some have been sucessful by blocking ntp.org

This worked! I was able to block ntp.org on the Parental Controls option on the router control site. I then did a reset of the Smartthings hub and set everything back up in the app. It downloaded the necessary firmware update and I was able to pair all the ZWave devices that I have. I remembered to remove the block (turned off the Parental Controls) after the reset. Everything works now, no issues. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you help, both of you. Thanks!!!
