Is it possible to have Amazon Echo play music/or a handpicked audio file when something is triggered? For example, play music when a contact sensor is triggered?

You can use the Echo via Bluetooth to an Android phone or tablet using LANdroid and LANnouncer.
Well… released on Google Play and on the website. SmartThings hasn’t approved the device handler or SmartApp yet.
But…
Do you want an easy way to announce events - with speech or with chimes and alarms?
Do you want to have such announcements handy while you’re not home - e.g. a chime when the front door opens on your cell phone?
Does buying a Sonos system or dedicating a computer to VLC Thing seem like overkill to get sounds out of SmartThings?
Then perhaps LANnouncer (formerly LANdroid) is the solution. LANnouncer enables SmartThings to talk on Android devices running Lollipop or higher, via LAN (local network) or via SMS.
See the LANnouncer web page for more information and to download the groovy driver (for now, until SmartThings approves the publish), plus LANnouncer on the Goog…

thanks…don’t have an android device, but will give this a shot.
If you don’t have an android device you can’t make it work. If you have a Windows/Mac/Raspberry Pi machine that you don’t mind leaving on all the time you could do a similar setup with VLC Thing
Do you want to receive Sonos-like sound and voice notifications from SmartThings but do not feel like spending several hundred dollars on Sonos? Do you have an old laptop/netbook (or any PC for that matter) gathering dust in a closet? If so, you can put it to a good use as shown in this demo:
[VLC Thing Demo: VLC Media Player Controlled by SmartThings]
“VLC Thing” is a custom SmartThings device driver that controls VLC media player and emulates Sonos audio player, making it possible to use Sonos smart apps to play sounds and voice (text-to-speech) notifications.
VLC is a free and open source cross-platform (Linux/MacOS/Windows) multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.
