Get ready to make the switch!

It’s not ignored, it’s that back in early 2015 they promised us the V2 hub would have “local processing.“ What was delivered was pretty close to what existS today, although they have over time added more stock device types which can run locally.

That was five years ago, so it’s pretty clear that whatever it is they’re going to do with local processing, it’s not a high priority for the company. No matter what they say.

Meanwhile, some previous smartthings customers founded a new company, Hubitat, with the primary goal of creating a multi protocol platform that could run almost everything locally, including groovy code.

They are a tiny company, but they did deliver, so now quite a few of the experienced Techie community members who wanted a smartthings like experience but with local processing have at least explored that option. Some people even run both systems.

And also meanwhile although company announcements continue to say that there will be more local processing in the future, well, it’s been five years. And I’ve been told, although I haven’t verified, that smartThings home monitor in the new V3 app has less local processing than the similar feature, smart home monitor, from the classic app.

There’s a Buddhist saying: “your life is your philosophy.“

I think people who’ve been around for at least a year have stopped wondering why the current platform doesn’t have more local processing. If they need that, they’ve moved on to one of the other competitors who offers it.

Here’s the conversation from 2015, if you’re curious.
