Fibaro fgr-223 DH needed!

thanks, it all works perfect. Fibaro roller shutter is now controlling an actuator for automatic irrigation.

Hi,
I’ve setup my Somfy 40 WT blind with a 2 way retractive switch (CLICK MINIGRID MD004BK BLACK 2 WAY RETRACTIVE SWITCH MODULE). As is, I fine tuned it so it would work manually using the wired switch; press and hold up and the blind goes up, and press and hold down on the same switch and the blind goes down.

The issue arises when I wired the Fibaro Roller Shutter 3 and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Following the instructions above. I installed the DH, paired the Fibaro with my Smartthings Hub (v3). I then tried to calibrate it via changing parameter 150 to 2. Through the old app, I tried pressing calibrate, and the blinds would literally move up for like 2 seconds and then back down for like 2 seconds and then back up for a second. Likewise, I tried holding the S1 button for 3 seconds three times to try and get it to start the calibrate; but again no luck…

It’s worth noting that:

  1. I don’t know if I should set parameter 20 to 0 or 2, given than I have a 2 way retractive switch.
  2. Once the fibaro relay is wired in, the buttons only work the blinds for 3 seconds or so, and then stop, and then you have to press the button again etc.

I’m lost on what else to try. :S

I got the same problem as you. I am using a Somfy motor as well. I was not able to solve the problem with Somfy + FIbaro FGR-223 + SmartThings.

You can take a look to post:

I think the problem is the motor support soft start feature, and the FGR-223 firmware handles this badly. And you can’t update the firmware with the SmartThings. I read a post that someone solved the problem by updating the firmware by borrowing a Fibaro Home Centre from others.

Around two months ago, I thought I have two choices, buying a motor without the soft-start feature, or buying the Fibaro Home Centre. I chose to buy the Home Centre, and the problem solved.

However, as I mentioned on 12 Sep, there are some disadvantages for using Fibaro Home Centre

  1. SmartThings App is better for the UI/UX
  2. The roller shutter is not shown in the Google Home app, because of “safety” reason
  3. The FIbaro Cloud is very slow (I am a user in Hong Kong, don’t know if it is better in other regions). It affects the response time of the Google Home a lot

A bit off-topic, I installed Home Assistant to solve these problems.

Besides, I hadn’t contact Somfy at that time, maybe they have ways to disable the soft-start feature.

By the way, when I connect the FGR-223 to the Fibaro Home Centre, the calibration worked without updating the firmware. Thus, maybe there are somethings can be done by the device handler.

Ah, that gives some clarity, thanks!

Did you by any chance look into trying an alternative z-wave roller blind relay? I’m wondering if one of those would make a difference.

The FGR-223 uses the power consumption of the motor to determine whether it has hit a limit switch. You can try changing a couple parameters to tweak how that behaves.

Try increasing parameter 154 to 20 or 30 (default is 10 which is 1 second). Parameter 154 is the amount of time to wait between hitting the limit switch and stopping the motor, so you would want it to be slightly longer than the soft start/stop feature takes.

Another to try is parameter 155, which is the power threshold used to determine if a limit switch has been hit. Default is 10W, so if the motor’s soft start pulls less than that, the FGR-223 will think your motor has already hit the limit and stop. If you’re seeing power reports in live logging, you can use those as a guide for setting the threshold. If not, just try decreasing from 10.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I’ve tried the following:
Parameter 20: set to 0 (I have a 2 way retractive switch, so I don’t know if it’s supposed to be 0 or 2).
Parameter 150: set to 2
Parameter 154: set to 30
Parameter 155: set to 5.

Still the same behaviour every time… the blinds come down briefly, then back up briefly, then back down again.

Here’s the log:

@philh30 I don’t know if it matter, but there’s this line:

“error Fibaro Roller Shutter 3 requires calibration. Position of 254% reported.”

@Dos_Lo I’ve gone ahead and contacted Somfy with regards to disabling the soft start, I’ll let you know if I find something useful out. I’d prefer to not add the Fibaro Home Center. Do you have to always use it, or could you have used it just to calibrate and then shift back to the SmarThings Hub?

You guys reckon I might have some luck trying an alternative brand? I found the following ones:

  1. https://aeotec.com/z-wave-motor-shutter-curtain-control/
  2. https://qubino.com/products/flush-shutter/#takecontrol
  3. https://www.zipato.com/product/micro-module-motor-controller
  4. http://www.tkbhome.com/upimg/file/1202353430132.pdf

I didn’t try other brands. As I am not familiar with the electric circuits, it is too costly for me to replace it.

The calibration need to be done whenever the FGR-223 is connected to a zwave hub. So you cannot do the calibration with the home centre and use it with the SmartThings.

I tried the parameters mentioned by @philh30, but they were not working in my case. And I also got this error in my log.

By the way, there are three blinds in my home, and two of them were calibrated successfully at first, without setting any parameters. However, during testing, I tried to calibrate them again. And they failed. This is the main reason I gave up trying the parameters.

Ok,
So I went ahead and attempted to resolve the issue by trying out the Qubino and Aeotec shutter relays. Qubino behaves literally the same way as the Fibaro (ie briefly moves up, then down and then up; thereby failing to calibrate correctly).

The Aeotec is wired differently, the relay gets its power separately, so it behaves a bit differently. The physical switches don’t work (I think it has something to do with the fact that my relay has v4 .xx firmware and the available device handler is for v2); but app control kinda works. By kinda, I mean that it is a time based relay, so it measures how long it takes to go from closed to open on calibration and then works based on that. Unfortunately, this doesnt work so well wit these soft start/stop motors since the acceleration/deceleration will cause issues with positioning if you use them beyond fully open and fully close.

There’s only two other options:

  1. @Dos_Lo I think I’m going to try the Fibaro HCL next. Is this fine, or do I need an HC2? Do the blinds work correctly using the physical wall switch if you unplug the Fibaro HCL? Finally, did you transition to using the HC for everything? Or are you still using SmartThings alongside it?
  2. An alternative motor to the Somfy 40WT that doesn’t have soft start stop. Any recommendations? I’m based in the UK.

I bought HC2, because I think it has a better appearance. For the FG2-223 part, their functionality should be the same.

I didn’t try to unplug the Fibaro HC2, since it is essential for communicating with the Google Home. But I can have a try for you tonight (GMT +8 here).

By the way, the positioning ratio is not correct in the the Fibaro app, i.e. 50% in the app doesn’t mean 50% for the blinds. As there is no high demand, I didn’t spend much time to fine tune it.

Yes, I transited all the Fibaro devices to HC, and dropped the SmarThings. For other devices, like Sony TV, Dyson Fans, I control them with Home Assistant.

i thought fibaro "now works with smartthings " so should have a native device handler ?
anyway connecting to a generic 10 yr old electric projector screen ,
paired easy enough but had to change to the device handler posted ,
problem i have it drops but doesn’t retract ,on calibration just keeps going down ,
9ft wide so could do without taking it down ,
sounds like the problem may the left hand side , away from the motor , but need to re-connect the controller to see if its the module or motor , ( remote stopped working seemed this was the way to go ? ) tried inverting via software /parameters and changing via hard wire , anyone seeing the same ?

Just posted on another tread… This Device Handler is also working with the new Fibaro Walli Roller Shutter FGWREU-111. My post can be found here :

@philh30 are you planning to update the DH any time in the future?

If yes, you might want to consider add the scene control handling to the DH.

There is an example code in the Dimmer Switch 2 DH:

Oh, and there are some people who are struggling with some Fibaro devices, as they do not report back correctly. The messages are MultiChannel encapsulated so the DHs cannot handle it. You might want to add some extra code to handle those cases too, example is in this post. (Other Fibaro issues in the topic.) This might have been @zvika77’s problem when the report stuck at 88%.

Hi guys,

I have like 10 Fibaros RS v3 working well, but now, 2 of them are not replying with the status state. They work but the status don´t change at all, they keep CLOSE - 100% but the RS is closed.

I will try to reinstall them, but, is there any other easiest way?

Thanks

How can I power on and off the Fibaro device?

Hi there!

Just tried your DH, @philh30, and worked with the new app, but i also lost some indicators such as the scheduler, energy consumption, on and off timers… Julien’s DH works fine with the new app and FGR-223, but I suppose you made some fixes for the new version. Somehow I’m not getting it.

Could you please tell me when can I change Julien’s DH to put the icon you uses in your DH? I prefer yours!

Hope someday we can have an updated DH for FGR223 and the new app! :grinning:

Thanks in advance!

Íñigo

so changed the motor ,all working with a momentary switch ,and in the app ,
so i can use manually
but as i have no limit switch on the retracting(top), there is one on the drop ! ,
i can’t use the auto calibration ,
i’ve timed it and put into seconds in ,
but still it dosent stop trying to close ?
any ideas
tia

Thank you @philh30 for the device hander, that is brilliant ad works marvelously.

I had to change parameter #25 to reverse blind direction. As a consequence I a seeing the shade level as being reported at 100% when the blind is open and 0% when shut. Is there an easy fix in the device handler to change this around ?

Thank you Jolyon

Does anyone have an issue with the new alexa skill and the new ST app? I have explained my problem in the thread for the new alexa skill:

There is one other person who replied and said they have the same problem, but no other responses. Could it possibly be fixed thorugh the device handler?

Any help would be much appreciated
