Echo - SmartThings Integration in UK

US Support is suuuuper busy - so I am going to pre-disappoint. The answer 99.9/100 times is that we cannot move Hubs between US and UK servers. Echo and other OAuth integrations will be available in the UK soon.

Also, if you are in the UK, feel free to contact support@smartthings.co.uk or go to samsung.com/uk for live chat.

Thanks for the info Aaron. I suspected as much:-(

I’ll pop .co.uk support an email, but I suspect I’ll get an ā€˜Echo not supported’ response.

You are correct.

The products shown in Marketplace are part of the regional WWST and compatible device programs. There are agreements, testing, etc. put into place to make them possible. Since Echo is not sold in the UK, any local integrations will be unofficial. [insert nonexistent sad panda emoticon]

Even once OAuth is up and running, the local team will have limited ability to support unofficial integrations (same thing applies to Nest, Foscam, etc). However, the cool part about being an open platform is that you can connect devices to your hearts content - and then pester the community (and @Chuck_Norris) with questions.

I like your thinking - Community Hacking rules!!

Hi Aaron,

I upgraded from vera to smartthings solely for the Echo integration. It would be a bummer if this is not supported officially. Hell I bought the echo only for this reason as well. I really hope the OAuth issue will take care of this seamlessly, which will also allow integration with IFTTT and other apps.

+1 @rmbhatia - I don’t want to have to use Alexa as a door stop!!

Me too, so far I can’t integrate my harmony hub, wemo or Echo into my smartthings. Not feeling so smart at the moment

I’m hoping that sorting the OAuth problem will make it magically work. However, I do work in the software dev industry, so I’m not so sure it will be sorted. Multi-server / multi-region solutions can be a problem - especially as Echo is not ā€˜officially’ supported in the UK. maybe they’ll do some unofficial supporting just for us hackers:-)

Im still befuddled as to why we ended up with a different server platform - it seems to be completely different; surely a simple software port would have done the job, even if the hardware is in Europe …
Ive reverted back to my v1 hub which is hosted on the US servers, and remigrated a lot of stuff back - Echo and Lifx etc just work.

It smacks of two teams developing solutions independently, but with some communication! Mistakes happen or things get left.

Any movement with this thread ?

I have all the kit possible now - just want to hook up Echo and I can’t…

I’ve tried the echo-ha-bridge software on github using my OSX server, and may eventually press my Pi into action on this, but will be easier to have some native integration going on.

I’m also not that technical, so it took me a week or so to get the bridge working, and you’ve really got to be a techy to know what you’re doing there.

The native integration comes up with ā€˜client is not associated with smartapp in location…’

So, in the same way I setup my wemo plugs, I just add a new smart device and associate that with a smart app, publish them and then when I try pairing again, the app will be there and it will work.

Trouble is, I can’t find a device template or smart app template to use - but presumably there is/are ones available ?

Not necessarily, the official integration isn’t really a smart app, it’s a behind-the-scenes lan connection. It’s distributed with the hub’s firmware, but it’s not exposed.

There is a setup wizard smartapp, but I’m not sure that’s enough to get you pass the location issue.

Hi there all,

I’ve got echo being sent over from the states so it’s sad to read this thread.

Does IFTTT help integrate at all? I know smarthings have recently resolved connection issues for IF, does anyone have A UK echo connected via IF?

Cheers,
Michael

Your US echo should work fine with UK hub via IFTTT

I have it controlling the TV equipment through IFTTT and the Harmony Hub

I thought I would have latency problems, but using the Trigger command it works immediately, almost like a local connection.

Its very good, but would have preferred a native connection

Hiya

Thanks for the replies, that’s really good to know about IFTTT and Harmony Hub working with good latency. I also have the harmony hub and keen to integrate Harmony, Hue & Smarthings.

So as far as Harmony goes can you say volume up, pause tv etc or is it just a case of being able to run an activity?

Michael

You can do pause and volume up, but you have to do them through an activity, and it can be quite awkward.

I do this because I am quadriparetic (use a wheelchair and have limited hand function) so totally hands-free control is of great benefit to me. But I would think most people with more hand function would prefer to just use the buttons on the physical remote for volume.

Also, because harmony will not let you do the same activity twice in a row, I have to have two activities for volume up and two activities for volume down and switch back-and-forth between them.

The following topic does discuss how to set up these type of controls so totally hands-free control is of great benefit to me.

Hi, yes I have the Echo here in the UK and tried out the iftt connection to ā€œmake doā€ā€¦ I have to say honestly the time it takes to actually perform the trigger is disappointing. Its in average about 4 minutes or so, it lasted about 3 tries and I’ve now ditched it as an option tbh

I’m sorry to hear that, the delay does vary for different people. And different IFTTT channels.

My typical delay for echo to Harmony is 6 to 10 seconds. Long enough to notice, but not so long that I wouldn’t use it.

How quickly does echo itself take if say, you add something to your shopping list?
