Devices Auto-Rearranging & Renaming When Adding Secure Devices

Lately, I’ve been running into a frustrating bug with SmartThings. Almost every time I add a device that requires secure setup, all of my existing devices get automatically “re-discovered” and dumped into a single room. Some of them get renamed with a “1” at the end—sometimes even “1 1”—so a device like “Living Room Light” might turn into “Living Room Light 1” and end up in the wrong room. On top of that, everything gets marked as a favorite.

To make the app usable again, I had to write a CLI script to reset my setup every time this happens. I initially had this issue with my V2 hub, and after upgrading to a V3 hub, the problem persists.

Has anyone else encountered this? Any solutions or workarounds?

Seems identical to an issue in 2021…

The issue has been reported by multiple users since November 2024. No work-around. Report it to ST Support and perhaps they will find and fix the issue at some point

I was wondering what happened to all of my devices and organization. I noticed “1” after a lot of device names and my rooms were all screwed up. Couldn’t figure out why but i assume it is like you said after installing a secure device.

The 1 suffixing aside (a behaviour I have also seen although not recently) I have had this room moving once before, a while ago.

In my case:

  • Basically the app allows 20 rooms, at the time the web app allowed creation of additional rooms (still does, maybe?) which the Android app coped with fine
  • I created an additional 5 or so rooms from the web app
  • I assigned devices to these rooms from the Android app without issue

At this point I am not sure if I added a device or not but…

  • At some point over the next few hours all my devices were placed in a single room (but not renamed) as you report
  • Additional rooms were still useable but behaviour repeated itself so I deleted them (via app) and went back to the 20 limit after which all was fine again

So my question is, have you created additional rooms to exceed the 20 limit? If so maybe it is relevant.

@TheHundredthIdiot Thanks for sharing your experience with it! I have 17 rooms, so unless the limit has recently changed, it doesn’t seem like that would be the issue.

@jkp thanks for bringing in that additional context, seems like a bug was introduced at some point!
