Custom Device Handler for Wink Relay? (2016)

@Matthew_Freestone - If your drywall is not done correctly, then yes you might have problems with the Wink Relay switches laying flat/flush against the wall, but that’s a drywall issue, not a Wink Relay problem. I have 20 of them installed, and at least 18 of them sit flush against the wall (with no gaps). I do have two where there is a slight tiny gap, but I can tell that the electrical box is not flush, and another one has drywall problems (where the drywall is mudded a bit sloppy, thus causing a slight tiny slope) and on those two outlets the Wink Relays don’t sit perfectly flat against the wall.

I supposed if I really wanted to take the time, I could “re-mud” those outlet boxes, and then prime the wall, and then repaint (if it bother me that much), but an easier/quicker fix is just a small dab of DAP Painter’s caulk (all the way around the box) and then just press the Wink Relay mounts flush against it.

But no, this isn’t a “Wink Relay” problem, it’s a drywall issue, and it really hasn’t bothered me all that much. It was extremely minor, and it only happened on two of my outlets/switches, out of the 20+ that I had installed. Again, these were due to poor quality construction/drywall issues/problems (or electrical boxes not being perfectly flush with the wall).

It’s the fault of the drywall/sloppy construction (the electrician/builder of the home), and not really Wink’s fault. But overall, I was pretty happy with the Wink Relay hardware. Two physical switches, plus a touchscreen, microphone, and temperature/humidity sensor for under $70 was a pretty good deal, and I’m happy with them.

It sounds like you didn’t mount them properly. It did take some practice (trial and error) and I’ve learned that you can’t “over tighten” the plastic box/mounts, or “recess” it into the wall too much, or the clips won’t hold the actual Wink Relay in place (it will pop off, and won’t firmly seat). So you need to keep the screws a tiny bit loose (so that the white plate will fit flush with the drywall and not be “recessed” and that the Wink Relay can “snap” into it tightly and hold the Wink Relay touchscreen display/switch). But yes, I installed 20+ of them in my home, and they are all working nicely, and only two of them have a small tiny gap between the trim plate and wall, but that’s due to poorly constructed “mudding” around the electrical boxes, and boxes that weren’t mounted properly/level. I can go back and “re-mud” around those boxes, but it really hasn’t bothered me. A tad bit of drywall mud, or a tad bit of white painter’s caulk would fix it, if it really bothered me that much.

@tgauchat - Thank-you VERY VERY VERY much for your message. This was enough to get me started, and thank-you for the resources! That reddit link, had some good information in it, and I’m going to get started on my Wink Relays! Thank-you VERY much!

P.S. Is ActionTiles an APK? I saw it running on a Wink Relay (on a YouTube video) and I’m just trying to figure out how they installed it, and if it was an APK that runs on Android? Is there an APK version of ActionTiles?

Currently not available in APK form or Play Store install, but will run in most Android browsers above OS v4.4.x

We often recommend the “Fully Browser Kiosk Lockdown”, which can be downloaded as APK. But others may work (Chrome, Firefox, Opera…).

I’m using AT on my wink relays using firefox and its been pretty solid, even media tiles work

You might also you want to check out it thread, it details exactly how to get relay working with AT, also a way to have the two wired switches to work with ST via virtual switches and Stringify

That’s assuming it’s a tiny blemish. Mine is mounted on paneling and it sits flush but doesn’t cover the entire hole of a triple-gang box, and i’m not the only person to have this problem. It’s actually pretty easy to hack the relay to install other apks, if you have the original firmware, and i have not seen any evidence the firmware update is being installed at the factory. Some things to consider: It really is a wall-mounted phone, and this means it has bluetooth as well as a mic and speaker. After forcing it to the home screen, you have access to a web browser which allows you to install any apk that will run on android 4. There is no reason to upgrade firmware ever, but if you do you can usually factory reset it. Usually. I bricked one rolling back the firmware on like the 6th time i did it. I can’t imagine why you have two hub2s since one can handle hundreds of devices, but whatever.
If you are worried about wink going out of business, look at what you have as equipment. Anything zwave works on every platform. All standard zigbee devices have drivers on smartthings and popular ones work on many platforms. Lutron switches have their own hubs. Hue has its own hub and it works with all zll bulbs and some remotes with the benefit of instant control even with the internet down. If i hack my relay again, i’m moving all my kitchen bulbs to hue again and filling the screen with hue shortcuts and making it an actually useful scene controller.

I have been considering purchasing a few of these as well. I have been researching them for a long time but was waiting until a better solution came along. But as mine will be new, with no updates, it is looking easier as I am semi comfortable with the hack. My question is have you been able to retain all the features of the device? (motion, humidity, intercom etc)

Otherwise i was looking at using a tablet but there are no finished looking products out there for anywhere near $100.00. I can get a cheap tablet but the wall mounts that look proper are more than 2x the cost of the tablet. I was considering buying a wink hub for these if there was an easy way to just relay the info to my smarthings setup (IFTTT). Brilliant almost looks to be a good answer but they still aren’t shipping yet and are 4x the cost

out of the box, the buttons on the relay can be used as ifttt triggers, and other sensors can trigger ifttt as well. The only place i was able to use the motion sensor for something useful was stringify.

with getting this to work - would you still rely on iftt to use the actual buttons?

Here’s my attempt at integrating and it works great with all of my needs:

Very difficult? You can access the android interface and load a custom app to run the wink relay on smrtthings

You are replying to a thread which is two years old. A lot has changed in that time.

In addition, sadly the specific person that you replied to passed away last year. He is very much missed in the community. :disappointed_relieved:

For anyone looking for a current DTH for a Wink relay so that you can use that device with smartthings, see the following thread:

Yes I used that exact one

I am so sorry that he passed away.
