August Connect - update?

The description from this post is still accurate:

Controlling the lock isn’t the issue - it’s being able to receive real time updates when the lock is unlocked or locked.

got it thanks for the clarification.

I hope you guys attempt to start a dialogue with August. One of the main reasons I bought into SmartThings was because of the rapid expansion into a multitude of devices… and also, you guys actually listen to customers. Requesting a feature like this through August will fall on deaf ears.

SmartThings has been working with August for over a year, and until August provides a mechanism to update 3rd parties about changes with out unnecessary constant polling, I don’t see how offal support can be feasible.

The missing dialog is from August’s current and potential customers requesting support of SmartThings from August. If enough of you nag them it consistently it will happen, but right now SmartThings hands are tied.

Why not you or I or us on this forum?
We keep asking Smarthings but let’s also bug August.

Maybe it’s on August side maybe it’s not but I don’t see why Smarthings would not allow it if they could or we couldn’t find a way to get it to work.

Maybe August is worried if something happens and the door doesn’t unlock or lock properly who gets the blame August or Smarthings?
Could be just for security I really don’t know but i want it to work just as much as the rest of you.

The unlocking is no issue I come home and it auto unlocks just the leaving part. Wish it would auto lock but then again for extra security on my side I don’t mind locking it myself.

Sorry maybe I’m ranting didn’t mean too

I’ve used my Logitech Hub to bridge between ST v1 and my August Connect. While I’m as impatient as everyone else, I agree with their stance. I was able to set up both a Lock and Unlock activity for my Logitech Harmony remote, and I was able to connect to ST and get the Presence Sensor added to the remote. When this particular sensor was home, it’d activate unlock, and lock when it was away. I’ve since had to remove it though, as my Presence Sensor on my ST v1 started dying. I didn’t much enjoy having my doors lock and unlock randomly at night. And because it defaulted back to home when it became stable, I’d wake up to my door being unlocked some mornings. Because all of this was handled through Logitech, the additional settings such as ‘minimum time away before running’ and other features that really do help safeguard accidental trips weren’t available.

I’ve since updated to ST v2, in vain hopes this integration would be sooner with the new system. It seems the new Samsung Presence Sensor is a little more reliable (crossing fingers, I’ve read reviews), but I still don’t trust running this operation through Logitech.

One last update: last night I found that the Logitech Harmony Hub will let me bring in activities into ST, and I found another SmartApp that uses triggers to run these activities. Enabling the activity through ST would not lock or unlock my door. And as such, the trigger SmartApp was just as useless.

So, if you happen to have Logitech Harmony remotes/hubs, and only use one sensor, you can technically integrate, but without being able to poll, or have ST handle the commands, I wouldn’t rely on it.

I emailed August, I think my request was misunderstood but here is the result anyway. I bought the August lock about 6 months prior of having a ST hub so intergration would be nice.

Hello Damian,

Thank you for reaching out to August.

August is working on many different integrations to be able to provide a total home experience. We have recently released compatibility with Logitech’s Harmony Home Hub and are currently in active development with Smart Things. We do not have an exact ETA of when this will be available. Currently August is not compatible with Z-Wave or Zigbee at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Let us know if you have additional questions.

Thanks!
America

It would be nice to see intergration with smart things hub. I love the lock it works perfectly. I would truly hate to have to go with a z-wave lock.

It would be great if they opened their API so that we could build our own integration.

How about ST firing up the Bluetooth in hub v2. August lock is Bluetooth. Then it should work. Forget the API route that will take forever if at all.

@Tyler the August Doorbell Cam is WIFI and cloud based. It seems like it should be fairly easy to integrate with ST if their API is ready yet. Any recent news around August? Thinking images, video, and trigger from doorbell press.

The new Doorbell is pretty decent. Two way intercom sorta works already. Motion sensor trigger and video recording archive are to be enabled soon. Just live streaming with two way audio and static image archive for now for “missed calls” (doorbell rings).

I am going to be getting the August Doorbell Cam too. And if ST can swing it, I would love to be able to set the motion sensor to turn on my porch light someday.

I also asked them about the upcoming video archive feature, and they said their would be free and paid options.

So I’m new to the developer side of this but would like to know if there are any updates using the august connect to integrate it with the stv2 hub? I’d be glad to help do whatever so we can get this working.

Only if you’re interested in a raspberry pi integrated solution, which I am not.
Raspberry PI + AugustLock + ST

I just saw that post myself on one of the other threads. That’s a lot of work and $ shelled out for something that was promised to work a long time ago.

I can’t fathom why if a user has the Wi-Fi part of the August smartlock system, someone hasn’t figured out how to get it to integrate into ST yet?!.

Hello Tyler. It appears to be difficult for enthusiasts to get access to the August API through official means. Would it be possible for one of us to be considered a pseudo-“SmartThings unpaid consultant” who has access to this private API to create a robust unofficial integration with the August lock/connect?

I know this is a silly question; I understand the software engineering process, but it’s silly that this has gone on for so long without any change. From my experience with device manufacturers, it is a very high probability that August will never conform to SmartThings’ requirements. Rather than just throw our hands in the air and give up, let’s get something working on an unofficial channel.

Thank you for your time,
Mike Seese

I just reached out to August and expressed my interest in integration with SmartThings I realize that it might not do any good but I figure it might be good to squeak a bit in the hopes that if enough people squeak it might actually result in them doing something.

I really would like it if their keypad could be used in conjunction with something like the Lock Code Manager SmartApp to perform actions and change modes along with unlocking the door as it would be a very nice feature since the footprint of the August lock doesn’t actually change the appearance of the outside of my front door since the connection is wireless and can be placed anywhere near the front of the house.

Looks like IFTTT can now tell you if August is locked or unlocked. But it cannot be controlled.

I’m sure it’s been flagged already - but can we get an explanation from SmartThings as to why the device can’t be treated as a write only end point.
I understand it can be perceived as a risk - but for a long time just having the August Lock on your door was a huge security risk.
If I choose to blindly lock and unlock the door without feedback - surely that’s my decision to make?

After a lengthy conversation with Andy Rothfusz, Director, August Developer Support - August will be providing no August Connect API access, nor SmartThings integration in the foreseeable future.

Andy is of the opinion that opening up the API to provide access to the August Lock would be too much of an imposition on August, and not something that they are interested in entertaining this year.

The August REST API is not a native API for the bridge or the lock. It is an API which talks to our servers, and the servers send commands to the lock. Using the API involves a certain amount of trust because calls to the API use server resources (open sockets, database connections, work queues, memory and processing power), things that actually cost August money every day.

Their deployment of API credentials is not automated, nor do they have sufficient protections in place securing API endpoints - so they have to have staff permanently monitoring API use and access - and he has made the decision to not implement automation or additional security that would be needed for public access.

I can only encourage everybody here with an August & Connect to reach out to Andy directly.
