Arlo Pro integration with Smartthings

I have the same issue. Setup four unique rules (one for each camera) in Arlo “Smartthings” mode. Used SMH in SmartThings with “goodbye” automation to “Arm” the SMH and “turn on” each of the four cameras. It definitely works properly the first time. When I execute “I’m Back”, the rules in Arlo are still correct (as I set them up).

The second time I execute the “goodbye” automation, all four rules in Arlo “Smartthings” mode revert back to defaults

  • one rule for each camera with a name equal to each camera’s serial number (I want to use functional names)
  • all four rules set to trigger on motion or sound (I want to trigger only on motion)
  • all four recording video settings put back to do nothing (I want record for 45s)
  • Notifications set back to “Push Notification” (I want e-mail alerts)

I really want to use the “SmartThings” mode in Arlo with SMH to arm / disarm the cameras. It seems somehow the API call from SmartThings to Arm Arlo is causing the settings in Arlo to revert back to defaults.

I’ve spent LOTS of time spent troubleshooting, and can’t get it to work more than once.
Anyone figure out how to get it to stop reverting to defaults???

I am having the same issue and it has been driving me crazy as I really want this to work properly. Been doing a little bit of work on this. Here is a little bit about my setup and also what I can tell at this point in time.

I have a 4 camera system - 2 outside and 2 inside. I was actually trying to conserve battery and turning the cameras on and off through routines:

Good night - outside cameras on - inside off
Good morning - all cameras off
Goodbye - all cameras on
I’m Back - all cameras off

I looked at the logging and it appears that any time I turn a camera on, it re-creates/updates the rule in the SmartThings Mode for Arlo for that particular camera only. You can make all of the modifications you want to while it is off and it appears they will hold, but as soon as you turn the camera back on again, everything is overwritten and you are back to the defaults in both ST and ARLO.

Now if I leave the cameras on and remove the on/off functionality from routines, the modes in Arlo never get modified. This will work OK for me for the outside cameras, but the inside cameras (which I prefer to leave off unless I am gone) are always going to do this.

Looks like either ST or Arlo need to look at their ST app and modify to check for the rule for the camera within the mode, and if it exists already, then use the existing settings, but not overwrite them. If they are going to be overwritten, then at least set ST as the priority and don’t always go back to the default preferences.

For now, I plan on leaving the outside cameras on, and when I do turn the inside cameras on, I have setup Custom monitors to handle the recording from the cameras if motion is detected.

While I haven’t found a fix, I have found a workaround (I think.) I created 2 virtual switches in ST.

Switch 1 - used for arming
Switch 2 - used for disarming

I also used the ST app Power Allowance and set it to turn off Switch 1 after 1 minute.

I then used IFTTT and created an applet that changes the Arlo mode to Armed (the default Armed) when Switch 1 turns off. I also added an applet that changes the Arlo mode to disarmed when Switch 2 turns off.

I then modified my routines in ST to turn on both switch 1 and switch 2 when I run good night or goodbye. 1 minute after the routine runs (and Cameras turn on) switch 1 turns off and IFTTT changes the Arlo mode to armed. Only those cameras I want monitored for that routine are on and therefore actively monitored.

When I run good morning or I’m back, switch 2 turns off with the cameras and other sensors and IFTTT changes the Arlo mode to Disarmed.

Now, I added these switches and the delay because when you turn cameras on and off using ST it changes the mode to the default settings of the custom SmartThings mode. The delay gives it time to do that, but a minute later changes it from the SmartThings mode to Armed in Arlo.

My settings in Armed mode in Arlo don’t get modified and my rules are all setup for either motion or audio and the type of alert (push/email) that I want.

I’ve got minimal testing, but everything works so far.

I have the same issue with record a video und the serial number is shown in the arlo app.

additionally:
I use the arlo pro camera since 2 days.
i get every minute a push notification because sounds are detected.
i updated in arlo the smartthings rule to disable sounds and updated the sensivity to 90 in smartthings.
after i disarm the system and perform the arm routine, everything is in factory setting in smartthings (smartthings: device settings in the arlo cam) and in the arlo app the smartthings routine also is back to the standard settings (sensivity 80, sound is on)

every change in the device settings in smartthings in the arlo cam work till i start a routine in smartthings. then every thing is in standard.

have someone write the smartthings support center?
or is it a bug in der arlo app?

There’s a bug in the Smartthings Arlo interface. A software trouble report has been filed with Smartthings. For a temporary workaround please look at my April 4th post under this topic.

Ok thanks.
I wrote yesterday the smartthings support.

Will be there a solution in the next time? Does someone know something?

I am having a battery discharge issue since ST has come out with the Arlo Pro support. battery only last 3 days. I ave heard others with the same issue. Has anyone figured out the cause. I used the Arlo Pro cameras with the regular Alro configuration for 2 months with no problems or battery discharge. I change the app to get the sound function of the new Pro camera and have had discharge problems ever since.

Have you checked the sensitivity of the motion sensor and mics? I guess another question is how frequently are your cameras recording? Been running mine for over 2 months and still have over 60% battery life. I only use audio for triggering internal cameras when they are on though.

I have no recordings in the library at all.

What happens when you just use Arlo and not ST? You may have to delete everything (Arlo related) from ST and also just use the Arlo default modes. If your battery life returns, then add them back in and check settings again.

I tried that. The batteries lasted a full week with no discharge. 100%. So I reconnected it to ST. Died in 3 Days

Is Arlo configured to use the SmartThings mode? If so change it to use the Armed mode. Does the battery last longer?

Just in case anyone missed RobertK’s post from 21 days ago, I wanted to share that his workaround worked for me and I’ve been experiencing the same issues as everyone else. I went in to the IDE and update the Device Type to Arlo for each camera instead of Arlo Pro and I put Arlo in Armed mode and left the Smartthings mode alone. Now when I switch cameras on and off during my various routines the Arlo mode stays Armed instead of switching back to Smartthings with weird settings. All my connected routines now work as they used to.

Cool! Mine has been stable since.

but when your mode in arlo is always armed, so the arlo app make all time videos by motion or did you switch off in arlo manually?

I use the I’m Back, Good Morning, Goodbye and Good Night routines in
Smartthings to switch my inside camera on and off so it doesn’t record or
detect motion when I don’t need it to. I have my outside cameras always
’armed’ and ready to detect motion and record 10 second clips. My Armed
mode in Arlo maintains the same settings of motion sensitivity and how long
to record and so by turning the cameras on and off with routines I never
have to change the mode in Arlo. I also set up some custom routines to
disable (turn off) the outside cameras to prevent all the alerts and
recordings when I am outside and then use another custom routine to enable
them. Equally, you could just set the Arlo mode to Disarmed to achieve the
same result and then return it to Armed when needed.

This is the exact setup I have and it works perfectly, I’ve never had a problem.

Ok, since switching from IFTTT arm/disarm to SmartThings home monitor I have the same issues above. I just need an on and off switch, where the off switch is using the Disarm setting in Arlo, and the on switch is using the Armed setting in Arlo. Can a home monitor settings be modified or created to do this? Why hasn’t it been fixed if it’s been reported in over a month?

UPDATE: ok, I got it. I set my Arlo app to “Armed”, and then use the SmartThings home monitor and created a cameras off and on switch.

NOW, how do I get my Amazon Echo commands to turn the Armed mode cameras off and on, and not switch back to the SmartThings mode???

Good question! I’d be curious how many have actually reported? I’m following these posts to get running and call it a day. I’m guilty of not submitting a report and probably should!

I had submitted a ticket and it was responded to by Arlo immediately with a resounding YAWN!. :frowning:
