Off topic, but a kinda funny story. The company I work for makes power supply controllers, and at one time our product was in the Minitel devices that the French deployed in large numbers during the 80’s (before that internet thing took off). These things:

They were having problems with the units failing in the field, though. They’d just go blank, like they lost power, and they were blaming the power supply (and of course our chip). It was affecting roughly half of the units, so it was a big problem.

Well, we got a few of the field failed (and operational) units from them and started digging into it, and found that the only difference between the ones that were failing and the ones that weren’t was that, in the failed units, the power supply board had been installed in the case upside down. Seems that the case design didn’t allow for sufficient airflow in that situation, so the controller (which is really a controller and the power MOSFET that drives the supply) was exceeding design spec temperature, causing the solder on the pins to melt, at which point the chip would fall out of the board! Mounting the power supply right-side up kept it cool enough to avoid that, so they “fixed” the problem by re-training the assembly teams. :stuck_out_tongue:
