Z-Wave Network Repair / Routes

I forgot to mention that in a few cases, after a successful secure inclusion, the app would report finding 2 or 3 devices of which 1 was the one I just included and the others were all failed previous attempts. This happened at least 3 times that I can recall. The botched inclusions appeared as “On” but were unresponsive. I believe the IDE showed them as active even though they were not. I deleted a few from the IDE and others using the old ST app (just easier to find stuff).

Also, please note that I have 23 ‘rooms’ even though the new app forces a max of 20 (why???). I believe, but it may be pure chance, that one successful inclusion was when I left the default room instead of picking the right one. Any chance that it fails when the room number is ‘out of bounds’?

I will ask our internal support to see if they have any thought about this. This appears that the previously added devices were not configured by the mobile app (this is the step that new devices are shown to the user), so in the later time, it was shown. Let me see what I find.

@aruffell I will advice that I think the best solution would be to reduce number of rooms to be under the 20 limit. I understand this is frustrating, but this is a current limitation that we have.

@aruffell are you starting the pairing processing by scanning the QR code via the search bar or. Y choosing the z-wave brand from the brand list? I seem to remember having an issue when I I started with the search bar QR code.

It would seem that doing the inclusion after 21.45 central time made things much faster and better. I am guessing this might have something to do with CLOUD LOAD.

Below are a couple screenshots of what happened to me several times… several failures, then it works, and I end up with one good device and a few bad ones I have to force delete.

The ones below were just after 21hrs. I did a couple more about 45 minutes later and they were much faster and except one error, they both included properly without much fuss.

HomeSeer is not listed as a brand so I used “Generic Zwave Device” on a test and it worked fine. I then did other inclusions with the QR method and they too worked fine. The only thing that changed was that it was close to 22hrs (central) which is why I wonder whether cloud response time might be a factor.

I thought Z-wave (plus) device routing was limited to 4 hops.

I have two particular switches that are in the same 4-gang box. One of them, a GE/Jasco goes straight to the hub. The other one, Zooz ZEN27, goes all the way around the house. The IDE lists 6 devices, including itself and the hub, in its route.

???

Z-Wave is able to route messages via up to four repeating nodes.

Thanks! Looks like a great, in-depth article.

Six would be correct as a maximum. The sender, 4 repeaters, and the receiver. :sunglasses:

I am beyond frustrated with zwave on ST! My head is about to explode! For days I have been trying to migrate all applicable devices to S2 secure inclusion. What a nightmare!!! @Kianoosh_Karami this is absolutely not possible for it to be OK… There must be some issue somewhere, and likely way more than one. I am at a point where the hub struggles to exclude (yes that too!) devices, and even worse it just refuses to include more of the same devices I have already included. Some were quite quick, others took what felt like a zillion tries and hours of work. I ended up with 9 ghost devices which I had to manually create and delete. The network repair jumps from lots to few and back up to lots of failures.
I have a whole section of the house that is dead… I did find a faulty GE Zwave outlet, in that area, which is unresponsive even to the physical button. Could it be causing havoc? Who knows… I will physically remove it when Jasco’s zigbee outlet goes on sale. I am going to avoid zwave devices if at all possible. I now also need to replace my schlage zwave locks as I am fed up with them too. One just vanished and I gave up trying to add it back.

I am so frustrated I think the Canadians can hear me!

@johnconstantelo I am guessing you researched all zigbee locks… which one do you consider the absolute best? I need 3 of them. Done with Schlage’s classic zwave locks!

@aruffell More than happy to look into it. Sorry that you are frustrated.

Let’s DM about the specific devices you are having issues with and what issues. It is hard to debug your issues without looking at smaller ones.

That is the single biggest and best thing I’ve ever done to make my life with ST sooo much better…

The two in my house are the Kwikset Converts that just replace the interior deadbolt. We didn’t want keypads or touch panels on the outside, and we didn’t want to rekey anything, so our focus wasn’t on researching locks with keypad capabilities. They replaced my August locks, and as you’d expect, the best move ever for my locks. I’ve never had an issue since I replaced them, where I use to have constant problems with August locks.

My parents on the other hand wanted a keypad, so I went with the Schlage Connect deadbolt. Again, zero issues and works very well with ST.

So which one is the best? That’s very hard to say because my research was limited, but I’d say any lock that’s Zigbee… lol,

Also, a few friends and neighbors are also ST users, and most are using zigbee locks from various manufacturers without issues, and the one I know with a zwave lock is getting ready to put it on eBay to swap out with a Zigbee lock.

Having said all that, I feel and have felt your pain and frustrations. My remaining zwave devices are behaving nicely, but that’s probably because I’m down to 7 zwave mains powered devices, soon to be 6 (mixed between zwave and zwave+). You’ve heard my story before, so I won’t bog down this thread with it.

@johnconstantelo - I have not used a key in about 6 years (except USPS mailbox) and it has been so liberating  :D. I don’t want to automate the unlock, or have to pull out a phone/key so I will have to stay with one with a touchpad. I like the ones with the numbers that change position as fingerprints or dirt accumulation will not reveal the numbers… but that would require paying attention and taking longer to unlock… and if someone wants to break in, they won’t try to get the right code as all you need to do is kick in the door which is way faster.

I might get the Schlage Zigbee version of the lock I have. Mostly because this will allow me to replace them gradually instead of sinking $600 all at once without knowing whether it will be better or not. I purchased a Schlage rekeying set on amazon and can easily rekey it to match the other locks.

One thing that troubles me about Schlage locks is the lack up firmware updates. My 3 locks have different fw versions and seem to operate differently with the most recent being the most reliable. Do any new locks have updateable firmware?

If anyone wonders, the Schlage zwave locks have been quite reliable as long as you don’t have to include/exclude. I’ve had rare cases of other issues, such as batteries lasting zilch but all have been addressed. The one top issue is that every time I have to exclude/include, it is hell 100%. That may be totally related to my network issues (@Kianoosh_Karami pointed out that all my Zooz devices are excessively chatty so I might have to replace them if I can’t get them to STFU  )

Please start a new thread for the zigbee Conversation. It’s interesting information, but it’s way off topic for this thread. Thanks! :sunglasses:

So I did a “Repair Z-Wave Network” (from the classic app) and it ran for about an hour… and nothing changed. Where can you see logs or messages about the result?

This device has the worst routing. I’m not sure how it got like this; the device has always been 10’ from my hub since I first installed it. None of those other devices have ever been close to it.

Edit: I ran another one from the ide (My Hubs => Utilities => Repair Z-Wave Network). It popped up a window with hub event logs filtered on zwNwkRepair. This second one finished in under 2 minutes. Still none of my routing has changed.

moments ago HUB zwNwkRepair finished Z-Wave network repair finished false
2020-04-26 2:17:36.160 PM EDT
moments ago HUB zwNwkRepair started Z-Wave network repair started false

Is that a battery operated sensor? If so, try to keep it awake during the network repair otherwise it may remain asleep during the repair. I don’t know whether waking it once would be sufficient so I would try pressing its wake button at intervals shorter than its wake time.

Yes, that one is battery operated and I didn’t wake it up, so it makes sense that it didn’t change. But none of the routes changed – included the hardwired devices, like my GE/Jasco switches:

Did you get any failure messages? While I do not know why, I often get errors stating the routes could not be updated. After a few attempts, they typically update and errors go away.

Example from a couple days ago:

I believe the routing shown in the ide only updates once every 24 hours to keep server load down.
