Z-Wave + integrated blinds/shades: Custom Graber Virtual Cord Shades

Do you have any experience or suggestions for motorized curtains instead of blinds? I know Somfy makes a Glydea kit for motorized curtains and it has a built in z-wave controller.

We have experience with the Glydea motors but not with the z-wave interface since we stopped selling the motors after a while. They are excellent but we just ran into issues with customers who weren’t willing to troubleshoot the curtain tracks and provide us with the relevant information without an in home visit when and if problems arrived. Normal blinds and shades are usually far simpler to troubleshoot since you don’t have a track system involved.

One thing I can tell you is that the z-wave integration would most likely be similar to the ZRTSI implementation (open, close, preset position), but I could be wrong. Sorry I couldn’t be much more help.

Do you recommend anything else for curtains? Or do you just do motorized blinds/shades?

We haven’t really looked into curtain motors all that much after our initial experience about two years ago. I know some members on the ST community have used the DOOYA motors: https://community.smartthings.com/search?q=dooya

I used a dooya curtain track and used this video as a guide:

You’ll also have to buy / reuse curtain panels along with this. I also had to get curtain clips, which I got for $2 from Ikea.

One thing I wish I realized is the ‘curtain bunch’ takes up 13" of track space when you center open. So you want to make sure you have at least 13" on each side for your curtain so it doesn’t partially cover the edge when it’s open.

Cost me about $130 + $40 + $3 = $173 total for it, not counting the curtain panel which I reused.

I just got my graber shade this weekend and installed it. Its working great. The one weird thing I have going on is that the mini remote appears to be controlling one of my z-wave switches across the house. I am guessing it might have to do with default association groups. Anyone got any pointers on how to fix this? The z-wave switch is a GE Dimmer using the enhanced dimmer DTH. I have like 5 other switches that running the same handler but the funny thing is this is the first z-wave switch I ever installed in my house.

@Nvious1
We’ve had 2 previous cases where this happened (Only on ST mind you). Removing the switch and adding it back to ST seems to fix the issue.

Ok, I will give that a try to re-pair the GE Switch and do some testing. Thanks for the quick response.

Add one more case to the list! At least 2 of my remotes started turning on the lights tied to a GE dimmer. Excluding the remote from ST and re-adding it / adding it as a secondary controller fix it. I’m guessing someone touched the switch when I was pairing the remote to the shade. The switches go in pair more just by operating them. Thanks!

I am a newbie to Smartthings and I looking for motorized Shades / z wave (Europe) / battery powered / solar power if possible. They will go on the outside of my house which is situated on a large lake in Europe so the weather can get rather rough.

I have read the posts above and these are manly relating to US products that are on US Z wave protocol, so if anyone has had any good experience with any of the above mentioned shades that work with the UK/Ireland Smartthings please can you let me know?

Currently not aware of any with EU z-wave support.

Ordered two blackout roller shades a few weeks ago; they worked great right out of the box with the included remote. I just got around to pairing with ST and now I have voice control with Alexa and scheduled opening/closing in the morning/evening!! Thanks Neal @ZebraBlinds for your videos on how to pair with ST!

Has anyone had luck running power through their walls to these shades? What are my options here?

We just installed blackout shades in our bedroom-- they work great and the cord is hidden completely by our curtains. We’d like to install 3 more in our living room, but our power outlets aren’t as conveniently located in that room.

Hi ZebraBlinds,

I’m about to place an order for some composite blinds with tilt motors. I have a question about the measurements. I am planning to do an outside mount just above the molding. I have measured the height from the bottom of the window pane to the top of the molding above it. Do I need to add anything to that measurement to allow for the mounting brackets?

If it matters, I am getting the 2.5" valence with standard return. Thanks!

Ken

If you are going to install the blind above the molding you should add 2.5 - 3" to the height. The balance won’t matter.

  1. We currently don’t offer side tracks mainly since its quite expensive through us, it’s simply not worth it. What I would recommend is sourcing side tracks from your local home depot or lowes and cutting them down to size. As long as they are 1" wide it should be good.
  2. I don’t have an example of a sealed hembar, but I can take a picture of the fabric wrapped ones and send it to you. Size wise both wold be the same.
  3. The remotes can be paired directly to the shade without a hub or using a hub. These are meant to work as standalone units as well.

Thanks for the quick reply!
I don’t mind cutting side tracks to size I’ll just have to find some that work well.

I found some pictures of a sealed hembar and I think I understand now.

Help. Bought my first set of blinds. Great product, have the 16 channel somfy controller. Can control the blinds on rts channel using the somfy controller.
Not sure how to control it with smartthings. It’s added as a zwave controller in smartthings. If I click on or off nothing happens?

Ok, since these are RTS blinds with ZRTSII setup has a few additional steps. First go through this video to pair the channels up and the zrtsi properly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9mcPuM53Eg

Once that is done this thread has device handlers and a whole bunch of great info on the ZRTSII and ST: My Somfy-SmartThings Integration
