Z-Wave connection issues

I dislike single purpose Repeaters because of the marketing for them and the fact that they’re usually a waste of money. I don’t dislike the engineering on them. Just that you can always get exactly the same benefits to your mesh from a dual purpose zwave plus light switch or a pocket socket.

That wasn’t true back in the third generation when not all devices transmitted at maximum power. But now they do, so the single purpose repeaters are just a marketing device to get people to spend more money. That’s the source of my dislike.

If you already have them and they are working well for you, no problem. But nobody should be going out and buying new ones these days. A pocket socket in the same location gives you more functionality and often costs less. € £ $ :money_mouth_face:

The one current exception would be if you need an S2 repeating device: those are still hard to find. So I’m fine with the single purpose repeater that comes with the ring alarm system, for example, because there isn’t really a good substitute unless you happen to be using the newest GE light switches. But eventually we will get inexpensive S2 pocket sockets and the single purpose S2 repeaters will no longer be needed.

I didn’t buy them until I started having problems, flaky access, repair errors, etc. I may replace them with z-wave outlets. At least one that’s in a visible, usable location. Had to put one repeater between hub and switches in the kitchen, then two more to reliably reach the north corner of the great room (about 50ft clear line of sight!?).

Not to go too far off topic but I started looking for a Zigbee outlet to replace a pocket socket and haven’t managed to find any that work with SmartThings
