My question is in the title.
Where does it tell you the location mode in the new app?
I have scenes that change the location mode but I have no idea what location I’m in…

Click on More Options (3 dots in the upper right of the dashboard)
Select manage location

And, yes, it’s annoying that it is buried that deep. 
Some people use virtual switches to represent the location mode just so they can see which one is “on“ on the home screen.
