Got my timer in on Wed and the Leviton Z-Wave Appliance module (I had a dimmer module but thought that it wouldn’t be a good idea to have this turned on and off with dim) in yesterday. Setting this up couldn’t be easier. I had to adjust the stop point on the timer to have it set to the heat setting that we have our heater set at. But well its now turning on at 6am so the water is up to full temp by the time we start our morning showers, and it shutsoff when the goodbye routine runs. Curious to see my gas usage drop. I know it’ll be hard to see right now in the winter but we’ll see.
How are you controlling a gas water heater? Is it a pilotless model?
Seems a little “iffy” to me, the gas valve is just not designed for being turned up and down numerous times. Think about it, over the life of a water heater it might get adjusted 10 times.
I am controlling a water heater with a pilot, so the gas valve does not get adjusted. In case you want to control an electrical heater you may want use a stronger relay
@Paul_Haskins no mine is not a pilotless model but it doesn’t affect the pilot setting only the temp setting. I understand your concern here with this and perhaps @gwht123 as he’s the devices creator can fill us in on the risks of constantly changing the temp control knob.
Great - didn’t know the creator was on here.
I do like the idea. I had timers on my electric ones, but that was 14 years ago in a previous home.
So far the only issue I’ve had is with ST routines not turning it on in the morning when I tell it to. So I created a rule in rule manager to do it for me but sometimes ST misses that too lol.
Hi,
If you have a doubt about a gas control valve not being designed to turn up & down numerous times, I have done hours of research on this question. All of the gas valves on the market today that have a manual temperature adjustment are designed to turn up & down with no limitations. Also, if there were any potential liability issue with a water heater gas valve being used in this way, the manufacturer would either not offer this option or at the very least have a disclaimer clearly advertised.
I am new to all this, so please forgive me and my lack of knowledge. I have an electric hot water heater running off 240. I have not found anything that will handle that kind of voltage, so I was just going to put the old style timer on it…am I correct. I saw someone on this thread talk about an electric one, but it read like his is running off 110. Thanks
Aeon heavy duty load. 240v. 40a
This coupled with any ST receptacle
I Have a gas water heater with a pilot lamp (Manual Light up). Is there a way to automate on off the water heater at times? Do I have to buy a new water heater with a electric on off or is there any other way?

Been some discussion on here, and I believe the inventor is also on the forum. I plan on getting one. It leaves the pilot on, but sets the t-stat way back.

Do you have settings for Off position and on off Point? I like to set it up to off and on at my desired setting rather than some defaults which come with the unit. (Ex 1/4 of a turn for on/off is not acceptable, I need to set it up to my liking. Is it possible)
The device comes with instructions for adjusting the on point. I had to adjust mine for the proper temp. Maybe @jeff_Davis can provide better information. Thanks.
So you like yours?
I’m thinking hard about how i could use one with my wife’s relatively unpredictable schedule.
I do like it especially at night when we’re asleep. I also have it set to be off when no one is home. Remember just because it’s off doesn’t mean that the water goes instantly cold.
How about the Off Point? No need to adjust that?
No had no need to adjust that. When you order the device there are 3 pictures of thermostats and you just click the one that matches yours.
if you want the ‘ducks guts’ in thermostat that will heat your water when you want then get a Tado. A German made device that has geosense built into it. It allows you to set the temperature to regulate your boiler, works on location & presence detection. If you are not home it can be set to not heat the water. Or if you know you are coming home you can access the thermostat via an app that allows you to turn it on & adjust the temperature settings rom anywhere. it works with IFTTT as well. www.tado.com
