UPDATE: Recent SmartThings User Experience & Platform Performance

@smartthings Can we get an update? Please!!! !

While no where near as cool as that, My daughter who is special needs, was waling around and bumped into the ceiling fan switch turning it on. Me, sitting on the couch, was able to say; Alexa, turn the fan off. Which she promptly did. My Alexa has not decided if she will say Ok or make a series of tones to respond. It has varied the last week. lol.

Smartthings has been such a pain in last two weeks and it continues to be a pain, such a unreliable system. It is time to make a move to Wink or Homeseer. I continue get false alarms, events are executed without my permission, delayed responses to/from the system and the list goes on, lights turning on in the middle of night, turning off when we do not want them to turn off, planned routines not working at all. My wife is so pissed off, feels like we are out of control of our automation and ST is doing what they want to do and taken over complete control. I have no faith that these issues will be resolved anytime soon. It seems ST has a major problem with their base technology that they are not telling users or their servers have been taken over by hackers, which is a very scary thought ??? Any comments???

Also, some of us can’t physically flip the switch. Just sayin’… :sunglasses:

Yes, and every use case is different. I only give my experience do that others might have an inspiration. I get so many ideas from the other users here. I just try to pay it forward.

I recently took the plunge and bought the SmartThings Hub. I have only had it up for about a week (bought it for myself as a bday present at the beginning of the week.). I am starting to regret this purchase, and probably should have gotten a WINK instead…

Now you may ask, why do I say this?

1st: 9 times out of 10, when I open the android app, it just spins. Nothing comes up, no errors. Just spins…

2nd: Upon first setup there was an error connecting one of my door sensors. I didnt buy the kit just the hub, as i found a PIR and 2x door sensor kit for about 10$ where as the whole kit was 200… This lead to having more than one listing for SMH on my dashboard. There is no option to remove it… after hours of googling the issue, I found out about the API console and that i could remove it from there.

3rd: When its set to armed(stay) and I open the back door to let my dogs out, i have to acknowledge the alert 10x before it goes away (even tho I only opened the door once). To get it to disarm, I have to fully arm the system, then arm(stay) then disarm? Why? Why do i need to do this JUST to disarm the system? Good thing I havent setup a siren yet… or done any custom modules that say, phone the police on breakin…

4th: Why is there NO local failover option?? More specifically, YOU, Smartthings, KNOW you have issues with your servers and infrastructure, this is evident by the continuous hourglass i get on the app, and in the API console not loading, Why is there NOT a local failover option? Where the device itself takes over in the event that the Cloud services are unavailable???

Give us the option to run a local server as failover. As I am fairly sure, 95% of the users who own a SmartThings Hub is a geek in some way and has at least 1 computer in their home that is dedicated to server-type duties.

I have until April 17th to decide if I am going to return this product to amazon. Basically I hope to see some improvements in service if I’m going to invest several thousand dollars in home automation based on your product…

PLEASE prove me wrong, and show me you have a good product…

I would love to have a local server as a fail safe.

I would also like to see multiple datacenters across the US…

I live in the central time zone, Texas more specifically, yet when I pull up the API console, I am ALWAYS connecting to the east coast… so if there is ONLY 1 DC for US and it goes down… then that is a major issue.

Give us the option of local failover servers…

And as a BENEFIT to all SmartThings users, Use the local failover servers as backups across the country, in a distributed server/mesh network approach. This will give you more redundancy, more stability, better load balancing.

Of course, please make sure everyone’s info is encrypted and secured so that no one person can see another’s devices/settings etc.

I also bought it for myself for my bday about a week or two ago. I’m coming from staples connect automation and have followed smartthings for a long time. I think me and you joined the system just at the most inopportune time. Give it till your return date and see if things improve for you, I’m an iPhone user so don’t have any of those issues you have with the android app. This system is really the most powerful HA system out of the bunch. I think you would be disappointed with WINK’s limited feature set. I really think things will get back to normal in another week or two.

I will stick to it… I have followed ST for a while and just decided to take the plunge into Home automation, and building zwave/zigbee devices for monitoring things, not to mention IP cameras to integrate with IFTTT, set my girlfriend up with access to the system etc when i have to travel for work, lets the furbabies out etc. I don’t want her to have to deal with a siren going off and the police showing up for a break-in when there isn’t an actual break-in…

I am a long time Samsung product user, Never had any issues with their products. I realize that ST was acquired by them and they probably did not expect to blowup like they have. None the less, Samsung should know better as they have been around for as long as I can remember.

I still would like to see the ability to run a local server as a failover option. I have a few servers here that i run and play with (HP server running ESXi 5.5 for example) that I could spin up a VM dedicated to a ST server…

How do I get a refund for my SmartThings system?

I continually get false alarms. The SHM will be disabled yet the alarm still triggers. I’m unable to disarm the system. Routines are sporadically working. The problems have been happening since the day I bought the system and it’s getting worse.

I’ve emailed support several times over the last few months and there’s never any solution beyond “Our team is working on it.”

This is definitely not a consumer product and shouldn’t be advertised as one. I feel duped.

I just got this this thing (Smartthings hub) last night. Can someone convince me not to send it back?

When will it work like it’s supposed to?

I agree. They clearly have no concept of web scale methodology. I’ve had my hub for a week and have had ongoing issues with the mobile app. I understand an occasional hiccup here and there, but this is just not acceptable.

It is a great product with great features, the problem is that most of the features advertised do not work as per specs all the time and they are going through a huge database corruption or security break or something where you will feel that you are not in control of your house automation. They are still trying to identify root cause and it has been a few weeks. It is a great device if it works as it is supposed to, at this point it is an unreliable box totally out of control and you will be another frustrated customer like all of us here @Mark8801

One data point: I was wondering that about 12 months ago, when things were considerably better than they are today.

While I agree with most of your statements, if it were not ready for average consumers expecting a reasonable standard of performance, then it should not be marketed as such. I think at this point most users of this product would appreciate a reasonable level of dependability. After all, they’re not giving the hubs and devices away…

I will give ST the benefit of a doubt…

I work in IT for a living so I know the troubles that CAN happen from time to time when dealing with servers, DBs, etc… I work in a Lab, so deal with it almost daily.

However, I would have thought that this was an actual Intelligent box that could function on its own when the ‘cloud’ wasn’t avail (to be honest. I wouldn’t call it a ‘cloud’ if you are only using 1 point of failure (ie 1 datacenter))

I have gone this long waiting on the ‘home automation’ front (mainly cuz i live in an apartment and don’t own a home yet). None the less, I am a bit frustrated thus far with this product, and don’t understand why we do not have the option to run this ‘locally’ instead of solely relying on the ‘cloud’ for command and control…

My number one reason for staying…

It’s fun.

I could have gone with Vera or wink and been perfectly happy. But they are boring. I didn’t get into HA because I had to. I do it because I like talking to inanimate objects and having them talk back to me, without the worry of being called crazy and getting locked up!

Yeah. It’s expensive. It’s a pain in the butt. It’s annoying. But it’s fun! And I like it.

So, I’m here for the long haul.

This is a list you will be adding to over time.

If they let you process locally then they wouldn’t be able to monetize your data. This is the best hypothesis I know of.
