Tough day on the east coast

I didn’t mess with anything but the double tap and changed the handlers back to stock for my Cree bulbs. I uninstalled the double tap since I can’t remember the last time I used it and it’s not a great app anyway. The ZigBee bulbs I can’t control dimming speed are OK too. They are in the bedroom. Now I might be upset if my living room didn’t dim slow going into moving watching mode like at the theater.

Overall, I can’t complain. I received a hub as a gift. It cost $100. 99% of my devices (small system, around 60 devices to date) are not made by ST so they are not getting any monthly income from me. The system now works well enough to make my wife and I happy. Lights follow us wherever we go. The lights are on when we get home and shut off when we leave. When I open a window, the HVAC shuts off. Turns back on when I close the window. I have garage doors i can open from my phone or from anywhere if someone needs to get in. I don’t use much of the SHM functions and trusting security to a one time $100 purchase you kind of get what you paid for, IMHO.

I probably have $1500 - $2000 in the whole thing with all the wall switches, motion sensors and door/window sensors. I want to add a few water sensors and maybe try building the sprinkler controller. I think I get that much value from the system.

I think the system has been so much better after the last big melt down. I do like to tinker so now I look at issues that last more than a day as “opportunities” to try and find a way to make it work. I learned a little groovy and wrote my own app that controls each rooms lights based on motion, mode, lux & I have the ability to have a virtual switch that stops the motion sensor from operating the light. I use this app for almost all my rooms and it works great. I would share it if I could figure out how to put it in github and post the link, though I’m sure there same thing can probably be done in CORE if I wanted to use CORE.

Anyway, I’m happy. If ST were to fold, I would look at the Vera Plus but my internet is pretty solid so the cloud isn’t a big issue for me at this time. The most important thing though is the community. I’ve made some friends and really enjoy the posts when someone does something really cool or collaborating with someone on a project or problem.

If you have made it this far, I’m done rambling and thank you for reading my thoughts.

Appreciate your feedback @GuyInATie

Anytime I see widespread issues, myself and others will work to get the status page updated sooner rather than later. That said a lot of times that one might think there is a widespread issue, it’s most likely an isolated incident.

If you are having an issue PLEASE send support an email first to get that process started.

Many factors can impact your SmartThings experience.

  • How much of your setup is bound to a SmartApp that has beta in the title?
  • Is your ISP having issues?
  • WiFi/Cordless Phones/Microwaves causing interference?

While it’s common sense that any of the factors you’ve mentioned can greatly affect user experience, I cannot see how any of them could cause a self installation of an app or auto removal of a device tied to ten apps. I wish I could actually replicate the forced removal but in normal circumstances you cannot. Even if the device is dead, we still need to go in and unhook the device from each app in order to remove it. So are you suggesting that database curruption is a secondary effect of any factors mentioned, or should get its own bullet point?

Back in april I did this for several SL and other apps that were not performing as programmed anymore, directly following the incidents that apparently resulted in DB corruptions.

No substantiative help ever came of it, Jody. Basically people shrugging their shoulders and suggesting I rebuild the problematic SL app. And sure that fixes it, I am doing it now. But that’s a tall order. I had 50+ RM rules and 50+ SL Rules. If every time there is a burp, I have to rebuild each one of those, this isn’t a good platform.

Just my antidote. Point is, one needs to have confidence in the system and it’s hard to do so.

Or like DB crashes and unexplained massive corruptions?
And as far as your fist item, I think it behooves ST to not use language that undermines solutions like RM and CoRE that are community built when Samsung’s commercial offering rely upon them. Instead, if there are specific issues with them, work with their Devs to address them. This seems like a convenient way to to cloud issues, avoid responsibility and at the same time benefit from the community. Basically, having it both ways.

Really, the issue here is how much of our HA is tied up in a Beta product that DOES NOT have it in the title, but clearly should.

Okay that’s my daily dose of salt. Sorry for the rant, it is how I feel. But I don’t really mean anything personally towards you Jody.

Actually for the first time EVER! I cancelled an order for a Home Automation product. I am sticking with SmartThings for now. My Aeon sensor crapped out so I need to replace that. Maybe the Holy Grails v2.5.4 will do magic.

I love the "Holy"Grails. Add’s just the right tone

You’d miss my cutting sarcasm and timeless negativity if you spent your time on the vera forums.

Believe it or not you were the reason I cancelled my order. Take that as responsibility!

lmao, sweet irony.

I get ‘greedy’ when things go well and often forget that 30 to 45 days later I need to sit down and rethink my HA strategy. And every time that happens, I arrive at the same conclusion. KISS! The fancier I build my system, the harder it is when I need to start over (or change a pivotal device or app)

This is the kind of thing that needs a support ticket.

I wholeheartedly agree. I also think it’s good to have reasonable expectations. The more complex your setup, the more care it’s going to require. As you introduce new and untested solutions into that complexity, you cannot expect to have a system “That Just Works”.

And that is the grand challenge SmartThings faces. Building an infinitely customizable, self organizing, self healing system. That just works for millions of households.

P.S. We are hiring developers.

I’m in Florida and I am having similar issues. I have wall switches and outlets that have been in use for over a year that haven’t been working correctly since this past Thursday. Looking at the activity log for one of two intermatic switches the one that controls my pool pump. I’ll see that it sent a command with no response, so I try to turn it off again and there is no additional log entries for each time I have tried manually turning off the switch. This appears to be a common issue with all the switches acting up.

I have eight other switches that are working but it may take a minute or two to send the commands.

This is the reason why I’ve kept my home automation solution relatively simple. I think there’s potential in the whole platform, but there’s also the possibility that things will go south and it will leave you in a precarious position.

I have ST hooked up to the garage doors but also have code that alerts me if they’re left open. And I can check separately if they’re open by looking at my driveway and garage cameras. I have motion sensors and get push notifications about the front door being unlocked, but I also have an alarm service with cellular and a UPS.

I would love to be able to use ST to its full potential, but I’ve been burned enough that even after 2 years I’m still taking baby steps.
